NASHUA, NH – Left wing David Meckler
and defenseman Andrew Campbell
recorded two points apiece as the Manchester Monarchs defeated the Portland Pirates, 5-2, at the Conway Arena in their lone pre-season contest Tuesday evening.
Meckler scored his first goal of the pre-season at 6:15 of the first period. A neutral zone turnover by Portland was collected by Campbell and dumped along the left wing boards to a streaking Meckler. A cut into the left face-off circle preceded a wrist shot that beat Portland netminder David Leggio stick side to give the Monarchs the early lead in the first period.
Left wing Bud Holloway
scored at 11:32 of the first period to give Manchester the 2-0 advantage. Defenseman Alec Martinez
forced a turnover in the defensive zone that was fed to Holloway unopposed at neutral ice. Holloway broke into Pirates territory unopposed and, on the breakaway, snuck the puck past a lunging Leggio to put the Monarchs up by two exiting first period play.
Defenseman Thomas Hickey
tipped the puck past Leggio to open up second period scoring. Meckler carried the puck across the neutral zone and dished it ahead to center Robert Czarnik
, streaking up the left wing boards. A quick wrister through traffic was slowed by Leggio, but trickled toward the goal line behind his left pad. Hickey finished off the play by poking the puck over the goal line at 2:34 of the second period, giving the Monarchs a 3-0 lead.
Center Justin Azevedo
scored his first tally of the pre-season 4:30 into the second stanza. With the offense firmly entrenched in the zone, defenseman Patrick Mullen
slid the puck to Campbell, his defensive partner. Campbell fired the puck toward Azevedo at the left face-off dot. A one-timer beat the Leggio to extend the Monarchs advantage to four goals.
Center Corey Elkins
, donning his new No. 39 jersey for the first time, beat Leggio to increase the lead to five goals. Center Oscar Moller entered the zone flanked by Elkins and center Jordan Nolan
. From the top of the slot, Moller passed the puck to Nolan, who was streaking up the left side. Elkins crashed the right post and collected a cross-crease feed from Nolan and wristed the puck top-shelf. The goal, scored at 9:28 of the second period, was the fifth of the night from the Monarchs offense.
Center Luke Adam scored the first goal for the Pirates at 7:54 of the third period. From the right point, left wing Derek Whitmore shot the puck on net where the initial stop was made by Monarchs netminder Martin Jones
. The rebound spilled out to the right post, where it was put home by Adam for Portland’s first tally of the evening.
Right wing Mark Mancari scored Portland’s second goal of the game at 10:12 of the third period. Center Paul Byron passed the puck right-to-left along the blueline to Mancari, who shot a simple wrister from the point that beat the screened Jones.
Monarchs netminder Jeff Zatkoff
earned the win, playing 29:28 out of 60 minutes and stopping all 20 shots on net. Jones relieved Zatkoff midway through the second period, halting 12-of-14 shots on goal.
Leggio drew the loss, allowing five goals on nine shots on net. Netminder Alex Petizian replaced Leggio at the 31:25 mark of the game and stopped all 12 shots on net.
