Monarchs Shoot Past Sharks

by Staff Writer / Los Angeles Kings
MANCHESTER, NH – The Manchester Monarchs extended their home winning-streak to seven games by knocking off the Worcester Sharks, 2-1, in a seven-round shootout on Sunday evening at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

Manchester (14-10-0-1) ranks second in the Atlantic Division with 29 points.  The Sharks (8-6-3-3) are tied for third place with the Portland Pirates (10-10-1-1) in the Atlantic Division with 22 points.
“It was another typical knock-down, drag-out game with Worcester,” said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. “We continue to find ways to get in the win column.  You have to credit Worcester with a determined effort.  Our goaltending was outstanding as it has been all year and that was the difference tonight.”
Center Robbie Czarnik scored the shootout winner for the Monarchs.  Manchester also received shootout tallies from centers Justin Azevedo and Marc-Andre Cliche.  Monarchs netminder Jeff Zatkoff stopped right wing Ryan Del Monte, center Marek Viedensky, right wing Tommy Wingels, right wing Benn Ferriero and defenseman Justin Braun.  Left wing Tony Lucia and center Brodie Reid scored the two shootout goals for the Sharks.  Worcester goaltender Tyson Sexsmith denied left wing David Meckler and right wings Brandon Kozun, Linden Vey and Jordan Nolan.
The Monarchs opened the scoring with an even strength goal scored by left wing Dwight King at 2:55 of the second period.  The play started in the neutral zone as Kozun collected the puck at center ice.  Kozun sent a pass along the left wing boards hitting King in stride as he crossed into the Sharks zone.  King skated into the left face-off circle before snapping a wrist shot toward the net.  The shot was deflected off the stick of Sharks defenseman Matt Irwin and squeaked through the pads of Sexsmith.
Lucia tied the game at 1-1 with a goal at 8:46 of the third period.  Worcester right wing James Livingston took advantage of a Monarchs turnover by stealing the puck behind Manchester’s cage.  Livingston chipped a pass into the crease and Lucia pushed the loose puck past Zatkoff.
Zatkoff (6-3-1) earned his sixth victory of the season stopping 38-of-39 shots in regulation and 5-of-7 shootout attempts.  Sexsmith (4-5-3) took his third shootout loss of the season making 28 saves on 29 shots in regulation and stopped 4-of-7 shootout snipers.
Manchester went 0-for-4 on the power play.  Worcester also was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
