MANCHESTER, NH – Goaltender Al Montoya stopped 30 shots, right wing Colby Genoway (2-3=5) collected five points and left wing Nigel Dawes (2-2=4) and center Brandon Dubinsky (2-2=4) recorded three points each in the Hartford Wolf Pack's 7-0 blanking of the Manchester Monarchs in game four of the best-of-seven Atlantic Division Semifinal Series B of the 2006 Calder Cup Playoffs at the Verizon Wireless Arena in front of 4,360 fans on Sunday evening. The series is tied 2-2 with game five in Hartford on Tuesday, April 25.
Manchester (43-30-3-4, 93 points) finished the regular season in third place in the Atlantic Division. Hartford (48-24-2-6, 104 points) ended the regular season in second place in the Atlantic Division.
Genoway slipped a backhand past Monarchs goaltender Barry Brust at 8:55 of the first period to give the Wolf Pack a leg up on Manchester. Dawes battled with Monarchs defenseman Joe Rullier along the left wing boards to keep the puck in offensive territory. Genoway picked up the puck from Dawes and skated to the lower edge of the left face-off circle and flipped a backhand shot toward Brust that trickled through the glove side and into the net.
Dawes scored a power play goal at 6:02 of the second period to double the Wolf Pack's lead to 2-0. Rullier sat in the penalty box for boarding and Hartford went to work. Defenseman Daniel Girardi sent the puck over to Dawes at the right face-off circle who fired a shot between Brust's glove and body for his third goal of the playoffs. Defenseman Marvin Degon also assisted on the power play goal.
At 7:53, Genoway collected his second of the night on a 2-on-0 breakaway with Dubinsky. Monarchs defenseman Richard Petiot could not keep the puck in the zone at Hartford's blueline and Genoway and Dubinsky were off to the races. Dubinsky carried the puck down the left wing and passed the puck over to Genoway for the wrist shot from the right face-off circle and the 3-0 lead.
The Wolf Pack capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play in the second period at 13:31. The Wolf Pack cycled the puck along the points as Degon passed it over to Girardi for the slap shot and goal for a 4-0 lead. Left wing Alexandre Giroux also assisted on the goal.
On the power play early in the third period, Dubinsky tipped in a slap shot from Degon at 2:15 of the final stanza. Degon collected a pass from Genoway at the right point and blasted a shot toward the net. Dubinsky tipped the puck in for his first goal of the playoffs to give the Wolf Pack a 5-0 lead.
Dawes made the score 6-0 at 9:09 of the final period as he picked up a pass from Dubinsky, skated down the right wing and blasted a shot past Brust. Genoway earned his second assist, fourth point of the night on the play.
To finish off the game, Dubinsky one-timed his second goal of the night into the net at 14:02 in the third period to bring his point total to four and the score to 7-0. Genoway and defenseman Marc Staal earned assists on Dubinsky's second power play goal of the night.
Brust (2-2) took the loss stopping 27 shots. Montoya (2-2) earned the victory with 30 saves.
Manchester went 0-for-4 on the power play. Hartford was 4-for-8 with the man advantage.
Game five of the Atlantic Division Semifinal Series B will take place on Tuesday, April 25 at 7 p.m. at the Hartford Civic Center.
