|Trevor Lewis, back in thelineup and healthy, scores his first goal of the season in OT in the Monarchs 4-3 win.
BRIDGEPORT, CT – In just his seventh game since returning from an injury he suffered in November, right wing Trevor Lewis
notched his first goal of the season to carry the Manchester Monarchs over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 4-3 in overtime on Saturday night at the Arena at Harbor Yard.
Manchester (35-25-3-6) is tied for third place with the Lowell Devils (35-26-4-5) in the Atlantic Division with 79 points. Bridgeport (33-27-4-6) is ranked fifth in the Atlantic Division with 76 points.
“The energy we created won us the game,” said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. “We gave up a goal late in the game that had us all on the edge of our seats. A stellar performance by Jeff Zatkoff
kept the game netted at 3-3. Trevor Lewis
made a strong move along the outside in overtime and scored the goal that got us a much need victory.”
Lewis scored the game-winning overtime goal 41 seconds into the extra frame to give the Monarchs the 4-3 win. Defenseman Alec Martinez
fed the puck to center Oscar Moller in the neutral zone. Moller sprung Lewis as he went streaking into the Sound Tigers zone along the left wing. He cut in toward the net and squeezed the puck through Bridgeport’s goaltender Nathan Lawson’s right arm and the left goal post for his first goal of the season.
The Monarchs began the scoring at 7:07 of the opening frame when center Juraj Mikus netted his fourth goal of the season. Martinez carried the puck down the left wing from the Monarchs blueline to the left face-off circle. Along the half-wall, Martinez shot the puck toward the net. The puck deflected off defenseman Jake Gannon’s stick and trickled in on Lawson. Just as the netminder went to control the puck, Mikus skated in and jammed the puck under Lawson for the 1-0 lead.
Left wing Greg Mauldin answered back for the Sound Tigers at 14:13 of the first period with his 22nd goal of the season. Skating on the power play as right wing Kevin Westgarth
sat in the penalty box for cross-checking, Bridgeport set up in the Monarchs zone. Mauldin picked up the loose puck near the top of the left face-off circle, skated through the circle and snapped a shot past goaltender Jeff Zatkoff
. Defenseman Mark Flood and left wing Trevor Smith picked up assists on the tying goal.
Center Justin Azevedo
gave the Monarchs their lead back at 16:54 of the first frame. Center Corey Elkins
pushed Flood off the puck in the left face-off circle in the Sound Tigers zone. Then as Elkins battled with center Mike Radja for the puck, he was able to get a shot off. Lawson made the initial save but Westgarth jammed at the puck and slipped it past the netminder. Azevedo skated around the net and tapped the puck over the goal line, as it spun on its edge, for his 10th goal of the season.
Martinez gave the Monarchs a 3-1 lead with a power play goal at 13:36 of the second period. Defenseman David Kolomatis
controlled the puck at the center point and found Moller in the left face-off circle. With Martinez open at the top of the right face-off circle, Moller sent the puck over for a one-timer by the defenseman. Martinez’s shot traveled through traffic and beat Lawson on his glove side for his fifth goal of the season.
The Sound Tigers cut the Monarchs lead to one with Radja’s ninth goal of the season at 16:28 of the middle stanza. Defenseman Jon Gleed collected the puck near Bridgeport’s blueline and sent it up the wing where left wing Sean Bentivoglio tipped it up the ice and into the Monarchs zone. Radja picked up the pass, side-stepped Martinez and snapped a shot past Zatkoff’s blocker to bring the score to 3-2.
Halfway through the final period, right wing Tomas Marcinko evened the game at 3-3. Gannon shot the puck from the right point and Zatkoff made the left pad save. Marcinko was on the doorstep to chip the puck up and over Zatkoff’s glove for his fourth goal of the season at 9:57 of the third period. Left wing Robin Figren earned an assist on the tying goal.
Bridgeport had a goal waived off at 17:36 of the third period as Smith kicked the puck over the goal line.
Zatkoff (9-9-0) earned his ninth win of the season with 26 saves on 29 shots. Lawson (14-13-3) took his 13th loss of the season stopping 24-of-28 shots.
Manchester went 1-for-2 on the power play. Bridgeport was 1-for-3 with the man advantage
