Kings vie for season sweep of Oilers

by Alex Kinkopf / Los Angeles Kings

HOME FOR ONE: Tonight marks the fifth and final meeting with the Oilers this season and Edmonton’s third visit to STAPLES Center. The Oilers are finishing up a three-game road trip where they’ve gone 1-1-0 thus far; they’re coming off of a 6-3 win over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night. The Kings are home for a one-game stint; they’re coming off of a 4-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday.

LINEUP: The Kings held a morning skate at the Toyota Sports Center in anticipation of tonight’s game. Vincent Lecavalier, who sat out Thursday’s game, skated as an extra on the fourth line and will be a game-time decision. Kris Versteeg took the ice after the morning skate and will miss his fourth-straight game as he nurses a foot injury. Jonathan Quick left the ice first and will start in net.

THE LAST TIME AROUND: The Kings are a perfect 4-0-0 against the Oilers this season and will go for the series sweep tonight. In the team’s previous meeting on February 25 at STAPLES Center, the Kings scored two third period goals en route to a 2-1 victory. Jeff Carter (2G, 2A), Tanner Pearson (2G, 2A), Tyler Toffoli (1G, 3A) and Dwight King (2G, 2A) have all registered four points against Edmonton this season. Jonathan Quick has started in all four games against the Oilers, stopping 116 of 124 shots faced.

WHO’S IN NET?: The Kings will see Laurent Brossoit in Edmonton’s net as he makes his sixth-career NHL start. Brossoit, drafted in the sixth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames, is 0-3-1 in four starts made this season; Brossoit is coming off of a 22-save performance against the Colorado Avalanche on March 20, a 3-2 Oilers loss. Can the Kings keep Brossoit from picking up his first NHL win?

SPOILER ALERT: The Kings, coming off three consecutive losses, and one most recently to a team out of postseason contention, are well aware of the dangers that can come when playing a non-playoff opponent at this time of year. “I think sometimes actually, some of the teams who we’ve played, especially like a team like Winnipeg who’s out of it, they’re playing light,” said Rob Scuderi. “They’ve got nothing to lose, they play hard and they try to play the right way, but it’s not a whole lot of pressure, and sometimes those teams are the toughest teams to play with when there’s 10-15 games left.”

DODGERS PRIDE NIGHT: With baseball season right around the corner, the Kings will hold their annual ‘Dodgers Pride Night’ tonight at STAPLES Center. The Kings will wear special Dodgers uniforms during pre-game warm ups, which will be auctioned off during the game with all proceeds benefiting the Kings Care Foundation. You can bid on the jerseys by visiting lakings.com/auctions or texting KINGS to 52182. The auction will be open once the game starts at 7:00 PM PST.

WE’RE DOING IT LIVE: Catch the ‘Kings Live’ pregame show at 6:30 PM PST on Fox Sports West, followed with Nick Nickson and Jim Fox on the live play-by-play call from STAPLES Center for puck drop just after 7:00. You can listen to Jon Rosen and Nick Nickson call the action over the radio airwaves on AM 790 KABC.
