KINGS (36-23-14) at ISLANDERS (44-25-5)
4:00PM PT, TV: FOX SPORTS WEST; RADIO: AM 790 KABC
ISLAND LIFE: Tonight marks the second and final meeting with the Islanders this season; the Kings lost to New York 2-1 in a shootout on November 6 at STAPLES Center. The Islanders are playing the second of their five-game home stand; they’re coming off of a 2-1 SO loss to the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night. The Kings are playing the third of their five-game road trip; they’ve posted a 2-0-0 record thus far; they’re coming off of a 4-2 win over the New York Rangers on Tuesday night.
LONG ISLAND FAREWELL: Tonight will mark the Kings’ final regular season visit to the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which is scheduled to close following the season when the Islanders relocate to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The Kings, as a franchise, have played 50 regular season games at Nassau Coliseum since the building opened prior to the 1972-’73 campaign, posting a 19-25-5-1 record. The Kings played two postseason games at the Coliseum during the 1980 playoffs, splitting their two games against in Long Island before dropping the series to the Islanders 3-1.
LINEUP NOTES: Jonathan Quick left the ice first at the Kings’ morning skate, so he is expected to start tonight. Brayden McNabb, Jamie McBain, and Andy Andreoff remained on the ice for extra work, so they are expected to be healthy scratches. Per Jon Rosen, here’s how tonight’s lines should pan out:
GABORIK – KOPITAR – WILLIAMS
KING – CARTER – TOFFOLI
BROWN – SHORE – LEWIS
CLIFFORD – RICHARDS – NOLAN
(ANDREOFF – PEARSON)
MUZZIN – DOUGHTY
REGEHR – SEKERA
MARTINEZ – GREENE
(MCNABB – MCBAIN)
PLAYOFF PICTURE: The Kings come into the night with 86 points in the standings, sitting just outside of the Western Conference’s playoff picture. They’re one point behind the Calgary Flames for the Pacific Division’s final playoff berth; they’re two points behind the Winnipeg Jets for the second and final wild-card spot. The Kings have one game in-hand on both Calgary and Winnipeg; can they make up some ground in the standings with a win tonight?
THE LAST TIME AROUND: In the Kings’ previous visit to New York’s Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on November 14 of last season, they beat the Islanders 3-2. The Kings overcame a two-goal deficit with three goals in the third period to secure the win; Tyler Toffoli netted the game-winner with 1:27 left to play in regulation. Tanner Pearson scored his first-career NHL goal on that night, tying the game in the third period. Ben Scrivens made 23 saves in the win.
