Jonathan Bernier stopped all 17 shots he faced as the Kings defeated the Coyotes, 2-1 in the first game of the Kings/Coyotes Rookie Tournament.

Oscar Moller and Wayne Simmonds connected on two goals while Jonathan Bernier and Martin Jones combined to stop 37-of-38 shots in the Kings 2-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes' rookies from in a game streamed live here on

Bernier started the game and played 30 minutes, stopping all 17 shots he faced on goal, including a great save on Coyotes top prospect Kyle Turris.

“[Bernier] made it look easy tonight,” Kings Assistant GM Ron Hextall said.

After a scoreless first period in which the two teams each tallied 10 shots on goals, Simmonds faked a shot from a sharp angle and fed Moller at 14:12, putting the young Kings up 1-0.

The lead would not last long as 30 seconds later the Coyotes tied the contest with center Tyler Johnson beat Kings goaltender Jones to tie the score at one. Left wing Adam Perry and defenseman Brett Motherwell earned assists on the play.

Bernier had already departed after playing just over half the game (30:08), and stopping all 17 shots he faced.

The second period came to an end with the score tied and Phoenix leading in shots, 27-19.

In the third and final stanza, Simmonds and Moller connected again just 5:13 into the third to take a 2-1 lead with Simmonds scoring. Defenseman Andrew Campbell also earned an assist on the play.

The Kings would hold on through a tense third period with Jones stopping all 11 shots he faced in the third, including a point-blank save on Adam Perry to preserve the lead.

For the game, the Coyotes out-shot the Kings, 38-27.

Neither team converted on the power play with the Kings finishing 0-for-3 and the Coyotes 0-for-6 on the evening. The Kings committed nine penalties for 35 minutes while the Coyotes were whistled six times for 19 PIMs.

The two teams will conclude the 2008 Kings/Coyotes Rookie Tournament with an afternoon matinee tomorrow at 2 p.m.
