The Kings Care Foundation, the award-winning charity of the Los Angeles Kings, proudly announced this evening that a donation of $500,000 – the largest donation ever made by the Foundation – has been committed to the Blood Donor Center at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.
The funds donated by the Kings Care Foundation will go toward the ongoing support of what will be known throughout greater Los Angeles as the LA Kings BloodMobile, which will serve as a blood drive supply truck to increase the much needed collection of life-saving blood for the most seriously ill and injured children at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. The LA Kings BloodMobile will travel to blood drives alongside the hospital’s Maxmobile, and serve as a "moving billboard" for the Blood Donor Program. Together, these two vehicles will enhance the Blood Program’s ability to collect donations throughout Southern California at schools, businesses, houses of worship, and municipal organizations. As a result, thousands of children diagnosed with cancers and severe blood conditions, or who require surgery will receive the transfusions necessary to combat their life-threatening diseases.
"Once you've stepped inside Childrens Hospital, and you've met the kids and the parents and the staff, you know you have to be involved," said Luc Robitaille, Kings President of Business Operations. "This is a great opportunity for us to raise awareness about the Blood Donor Center and make an impact on a lot of kids."
The Kings support of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles dates back nearly a decade. Every season, the team makes a holiday visit to the hospital and last year the Kings also participated in the MyFM Radiothon at CHLA, answering phone calls and taking donations during the radiothon while also contributing $10,000 to the cause. In addition, the Kings also raised more than $15,000 by donating $1 from each ticket sold during games played at STAPLES Center in January of 2009 to CHLA.
The Kings Care Foundation made its announcement this evening during the Opening Ceremony of LA Kings Hockey Fest ’09, a three-day interactive hockey festival that celebrates the Kings and the game of hockey taking place this weekend at LA Live.
