Kings active in Read Across America program

by Staff Writer / Los Angeles Kings
Beginning tomorrow, March 1, the Los Angeles Kings will be visiting five elementary schools in the Greater Los Angeles area to help celebrate the Ninth Annual National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America Day.  NEA's Read Across America Day, which falls on Dr. Seuss's birthday (March 2), expects more than 45 million readers across the country to pick up a book and read.

With appearances by Bailey, the LA Kings Ice Crew, Kings Alumnus and Radio Color Announcer Daryl Evans, and Kings in-Arena host Jay Flats, the Kings will be hosting Reading Rallies and visiting Classrooms to promote the joy of reading.

On Thursday, the Kings will be visiting Lomita Math and Science Magnet in Lomita. On March 2, the Kings will be visiting both Aurelia Pennekamp Elementary in Manhattan Beach and Rosemont Avenue School in Los Angeles, and on March 5, the Kings will be stopping by Bassett Elementary School in Van Nuys, before concluding on May 9 with a special visit to Arroyo Vista Elementary School in South Pasadena.

Also, in conjunction with Read Across America week, the Kings will launch the final period of the 2011-12 LA Royal Readers Program on March 1.  LA Kings Royal Readers is a five-week reading incentive program for students in KINGdergarten to sixth grade currently enrolled in an elementary school in the Greater Los Angeles area.  The goal of the program is to encourage children to read inside and outside of the classroom, as well as to improve individual literacy.

The Kings are encouraging schools in the Greater Los Angeles area to register and participate in the 3rd Period which begins this Thursday and commences on Thursday, April 12. Once students have completed the five-week program, he or she can submit their reading logs for a chance to win fun LA Kings prizes, including an LA Kings drawstring back pack, school supplies kit, and book cover, as well as an LA Kings Royal Readers book mark and bumper sticker.

About Read Across America
NEA's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss.

In cities and towns across the nation, teachers, teenagers, librarians, politicians, actors, athletes, parents, grandparents, and others develop NEA's Read Across America activities to bring reading excitement to children of all ages. Governors, mayors, and other elected officials recognize the role reading plays in their communities with proclamations and floor statements. Athletes and actors issue reading challenges to young readers. And teachers and principals seem to be more than happy to dye their hair green or be duct-taped to a wall if it boosts their students' reading.

For more information NEA's Read Across America, visit and and learn of other reading celebrations that are happening from coast to coast.
