Johnson Named USA Captain

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Jack Johnson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Los Angeles Kings/Univ. of Michigan) was today named captain of the 2010 U.S. Men's National Team that will play in the upcoming International Ice Hockey Federation World Men's Championship, May 7-23, in Cologne, Gelsenkirchen and Mannheim, Germany.


Johnson has represented the United States seven previous times, most recently at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. He was also a member of Team USA at two IIHF World Men's Championships (2007, 2009), two IIHF World Junior Championships (2006, 2007) and two IIHF World Men's U18 Championships (2004, 2005).

In addition, four alternate captains were named, including Nick Foligno (Buffalo, N.Y./Ottawa Senators), Matt Greene (Grand Ledge, Mich./Los Angeles Kings/Univ. of North Dakota), Eric Nystrom (Syosset, N.Y./Calgary Flames/Univ. of Michigan) and Kyle Okposo (St. Paul, Minn./New York Islanders/Univ. of Minnesota).

Team USA begins play in the 2010 IIHF World Men's Championship Friday (May 7) against host Germany at VELTINS-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The game is a sellout and, at 76,152 fans, will set the world hockey attendance record.

NOTES: Team USA practiced Wednesday evening (May 5) at LANXESS Arena in Cologne, Germany, after busing from Amiens, France, earlier in the day. The U.S. will depart for Gelsenkirchen, Germany, tomorrow (May 6) and practice at VELTINS-Arena in the late afternoon in preparation for Friday's (May 7) opening game ... All teams in the 2010 IIHF World Men's Championship may begin the tournament with 20 skaters and three goaltenders, and can add two players after the first three games ... Scott Gordon, head coach of the NHL's New York Islanders, is the head coach of the 2010 U.S. Men's National Team, with Todd Richards, head coach of the NHL's Minnesota Wild, Joe Sacco, head coach of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche, and Ron Rolston, one of two head coaches at USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, serving as assistant coaches ... The 2010 U.S. Men’s National Team is under the direction of Brian Burke, general manager; David Poile, associate general manager; and Jim Johannson, assistant executive director for hockey operations at USA Hockey. The U.S. Men's National Advisory Group, which also includes NHL front-office personnel Paul Holmgren (Philadelphia Flyers), Dean Lombardi (Los Angeles Kings), Ray Shero (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Don Waddell (Atlanta Thrashers), is charged with leading the selection of players for the U.S. Men's National Team ... USA Hockey's international council, chaired by Tony Rossi, vice president of USA Hockey, has oversight responsibilities for all U.S. national teams.
