How The Annual Draft Has Impacted The Kings The following list of eight players all represent key building blocks for the Kings. Six of the eight on this list were acquired by the Kings on draft day, while the other two were high draft picks acquired by the Kings through trades with other teams.

Jack Johnson
Acquired from Carolina along with defenseman Oleg Tverdovsky in exchange for center Eric Belanger and defenseman Tim Gleason (September 29, 2006)
Drafted by Carolina - 1st round, 3rd overall, 2005 NHL Entry Draft
  • Ranked second among rookies in blocked shots and third in ice time before a non-displaced fracture to his right foot ended his first full season with the Kings
  • Selected to participate at the YoungStars skills event as part of the 2008 NHL All-Star Weekend in Atlanta
  • Named the Kings “Outstanding Defenseman” and “Best Newcomer” for 2007-08
  • Only 21-years-old
Rob Blake
Signed as an unrestricted free agent (July 1, 2006)

  • Has more career goals, career assists, career points and career games played than any other defenseman in franchise history
  • The only Kings player to ever win the Norris Trophy (1997-98)
  • Named a First Team NHL All-Star (1997-98) and a Second Team NHL All-Star (1999-00)
  • Named as a NHL All-Rookie selection in 1990-91
  • Served as captain of the Kings from 1996-01 and from 2007-present
  • Represented the Kings at the 1994, 1999, 2000 and 2001 NHL All-Star Games
Anze Kopitar

  • Led the Kings in scoring and reached the 30-goal plateau for the first time in his career in 2007-08
  • Named the Kings “Most Valuable Player” for 2007-08
  • In his second NHL season he was named to his first NHL All-Star team
  • Won the Kings “Most Popular Player” and “Best Newcomer” awards in 2006-07
  • Is the first native of Slovenia to play in the NHL

Patrick O’Sullivan
Acquired from Minnesota along with a first-round pick (Trevor Lewis, 17th overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft) for Pavol Demitra (June 24, 2006)

  • Reached the 20-goal plateau in his first full season with the Kings (2007-08)

Michael Cammalleri

  • Finished fifth on the Kings in goals and points in 2007-08 even though he missed 19 games because of injury
  • Became the first King to record 80 points in one season since Ziggy Palffy (2002-03) after leading the Kings with 80 points in 2006-07

Dustin Brown

  • Only 23-years-old and he’s already played four full seasons with the Kings
Alexander Frolov

  • Registered his fourth consecutive 20-goal or more season with the Kings while finishing second in overall scoring in 2007-08
  • Averaged nearly a point-a-game for the Kings in 2007-08 despite missing significant time because of injury
  • Finished as the Kings’ team leader for goals scored in both 2006-07 (35) and 2003-04 (24)
  • Has three career hat tricks as a member of the Kings
  • Only 25-years-old and already his completed five full seasons with the Kings.
