ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings and the AHL Manchester Monarchs, defeated the Phoenix RoadRunners in a shutout, 1-0, Friday evening before a crowd of 6,374 at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
Despite 25 shots on goal between the clubs in the opening period, neither found the back of the net. The second period was chock-full of penalties, including four fighting majors between the clubs. The first two were handed out to RoadRunners right wing Ashton Rome and Reign defenseman Dan Knapp, who dropped the gloves at 4:33. Phoenix had a chance to take the lead at 16:31, when left wing Mark O?Leary was awarded a penalty shot for a hooking infraction. His attempt was turned away by Ontario goaltender Kellen Briggs, and the score remained at 0-0. The third and fourth fighting majors were doled out when Phoenix right wing Mitch Carefoot got some shoves in on captain Jon Francisco, and defenseman Shawn Germain took exception, stepped in and mixed it up in front of the Phoenix bench. Germain wrestled with Carefoot before landing a right hook. For the remainder of the period, neither team landed any points, and the clubs headed into the final period of play looking for their first goals.
Ontario took the first lead of the game at 1:16 in the third period. Right wing Bud Holloway grabbed a loose puck in the right face-off circle and launched a wrist shot that beat Phoenix netminder Kyle Jones on his stick side. Holloway notched his second goal in his second game as a member of the Reign, and Ontario took the lead, 1-0.
The Reign had to kill off a late-period bench minor, but managed to hold Phoenix to no goals. Ontario went on to win the match with a final score of Reign 1, RoadRunners 0 in the shutout.
