 Draft Day Memories with Larry Murphy

Born: March 8, 1961 (Scarborough, Ontario)
Drafted: Selected by the Kings with the fourth overall pick in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft
Years With The Kings: 1980-83

Career With The Kings:

Went straight from Junior hockey (Peterborough Petes) to the NHL and set NHL and Kings records for most assists (60) and points (76) as a rookie defenseman with the Kings in 1980-81...Led all Kings defensemen in scoring in each of his first three NHL seasons (1980-83) while averaging 68 points and 79 games played...Named the Kings “Outstanding Defenseman” in 1981-82 and the Kings “Unsung Hero” in 1980-81

Other Noteworthy Accomplishments:

  • Won four Stanley Cup championships during his 21-year, Hall-of-Fame career (with Pittsburgh in 1991 and 1992 and with Detroit in 1997 and 1998)
  • Retired as a player after the 2000-01 season and ranked second all-time in NHL games played (1,615) and third all-time in assists (929) and points (1,216) by a defenseman at the time
  • In 215 playoff games, he added 37 goals and 115 assists for 152 points
  • Named to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004 (his first year of eligibility)

What He’s Doing Now:
Currently serves as an NHL broadcaster for FSN Detroit, the NHL Network and HD Net .

Interview Highlights:
  • Had no contact with Kings general manager George Maguire before he was drafted
  • His first defensive partner was current Kings assistant coach Dave Lewis
  • Thought he was going to be drafted third overall by Chicago but the Blackhawks selected Denis Savard, clearing the path for the Kings to take him fourth overall
  • Likes the path the Kings are on while building a young and talented team through the draft
  • Has fond memories of his days in Los Angeles and still keeps track of the Kings
