Daryl's Development - Jordan Weal
by Daryl Evans / Los Angeles KingsKings radio color commentator / former left wing Daryl Evans – who since 2007 has also served as a power skating consultant for the Kings’ development team -- breaks down some of the club’s best prospects for LAKings.com.
In this fourth installment of “Daryl’s Development,” Daryl – who goes on the ice with these prospects in the summer time / off-season – provides insight on Kings prospect Jordan Weal.
Right Now
Jordan currently plays for the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He is in his fourth year with the club and he is tied for fourth in the WHL in points with 116. Also his 75 assists are third most on the club.
Back Story
Jordan, who is a centerman, was selected by the Kings in the third-round (70th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
What I Know About Him
Jordan is a very gifted player with great playing-making abilities. In his four years in Regina he has registered at least 50 assists per season. Jordan is not a big player but he has great skill and creativity in his game. Because of his size he will have to continue to work on his strength and power as he transitions to becoming an effective pro.
Why The Kings Tabbed Andy
Kings Amateur Scout (Western Canada) Brent McEwen says the following about Weal: “Jordan has been lights-out and one of the best players in the league this year.” He also adds: “Those comments have also come from other coaches and scouts.” Brent adds: “He has a great sense of the game and his team is only in the playoffs because of his play.” Brent also talks about Jordan’s deception and his ability to elude hard hits, commenting: “He has also found a way to put up big numbers and he has a high compete level.”
Going Forward
Jordan will have to continue to prove to all that he can do it at the next level. Getting strong through his core and also his legs will help determine how far he gets. He has to add some muscle mass without affecting his quickness and deception. Jordan will complete his junior career this year before becoming a pro.
