Creating LA Kings All-Star Rosters by Decade

50 Kings selected for hypothetical 3-on-3 mega tournament

by Jesse Cohen @KingsMenPodcast / LAKings.com

Even though All-Star Weekend has come and gone, it doesn't mean we can't keep having fun with the 3-on-3 All-Star format!

I've assembled five LA Kings teams to create All-Star rosters for each decade in the franchise's history.

The Rules

For the purposes of this list we'll be constructing All-Star Teams using the current 3-on-3 format:

  • Each team will consist of 10 Kings from each decade in the franchise's history
  • Teams will consist of six forwards, three defensemen and one goalie
  • The lines below each consist of two forwards and one defensemen
  • If a player's time in Los Angeles spanned multiple decades, the decade the player spent the bulk of his Kings career will be favored

Let's get All Star-ted.
(Editor's note: *audible groan*)

Butch Goring - Bob Berry - Gilles Marotte

Juha Widing - Mike Corrigan - Robert Murdoch

Eddie Joyal - Bill Flett - Terry Harper

Rogie Vachon

Hall-of-Famer Rogie Vachon brings stability in net for the young expansion team.

1977 - 1986

Marcel Dionne - Dave Taylor - Jay Wells

Bernie Nicholls - Jim Fox - Larry Murphy

Charlie Simmer - Mike Murphy - Mark Hardy

Mario Lessard

The Miracle on Manchester was played during this decade and it's no coincidence that all 10 players chosen for this team appeared in that game.

1987 - 1996

Wayne Gretzky - Luc Robitaille - Rob Blake

Jari Kurri - Tony Granato - Marty McSorley

Jimmy Carson - Tomas Sandstrom - Steve Duchesne

Kelly Hrudey

At the time, the Kings deep run in the 1993 playoffs was the closest the team had ever come to winning the Stanley Cup. No surprise that nine of the players selected helped get that team there.

1997 - 2006

Jozeph Stumpel - Ziggy Palffy - Lubomir Visnovsky

Bryan Smolinski - Adam Deadmarsh - Mattias Norstrom

The highlight of a difficult decade was undoubtedly the Frenzy on Figueroa. Along with the Miracle on Manchester, it remains one of the great playoff comebacks of all time and that is clearly reflected in the makeup of this team.
