A Look Back

by Staff Writer / Los Angeles Kings

(Re game recap): “I think the momentum started during the penalty kill in the second period. It was the strong part of the game…it was a big swing in the game.”

“I think we were able to throw out Game One and Two, not that you wanted to, then you lose in overtime in Game Three, if you asked about the series swing if we lost tonight, I’d say we lost in Game Three, not in Game One and Two. It doesn’t make a difference. There’s really no difference if you’re down three or up three, still about closing it out. Somebody is going to win Game Seven, somebody is going to lose.”

(Re game winning goal):” The only thing I could see from the bench is the referee pointing and not blowing the whistle, that’s his call and the replay shows the puck’s loose, so that’s all I could see was the replay.”

(Re not going down without a fight): “We have been through a lot together and we want to be a team that came back all the way and we want to be the team that says they forced a Game 7 and we were able to win it and gave ourselves a chance.”

(Re game 7): “They are a proud team over there as well. They know they are up against a good team and we know we are up against a great team, so we are going to do what we can and see what happens.”

(Re his performance tonight): “You try and go out there and perform the best you can right now. If that is winning a faceoff, if that is scoring a goal, blocking a shot, whatever the case may be. When the game is on the line, everybody in here is willing to do that and that is what gave us a chance to go back to San Jose.”

(Re physicality of play): “I think that is just the nature of the beast when you have a seven game series. Not that there was any lack of ill-will toward each other at the start, there was not but the longer you play, the nastier it gets. That is true of series and playoffs.”

(Re Thornton penalty): “That stuff happens. That is what I think a lot of people watching the game think he is a dirty player, I made a move and he acted on it. That play happens all the time.”

(Game Winning Goal): “We got cheated. Simple as that. I was told that you could see the puck laying behind his feet the whole time. That is why the whistle didn’t go. It’s pretty clear when you look at it after. That was obviously the turning point. Got to move on and overcome it again.”

(Top players): “I want to see a winning performance. Tonight was a hell of a game. It was back and forth, it was rugged, it was a hard fought game by both teams. Their guys ended up scoring late, after that goal, but we need a Game 7 performance from everybody. Our big guys are going to have to find a way to get on the board at some point. We have done it before, and can do it again.”

(Series with Detroit have any bearing on this Game 7): “Yes and no. I’ve talked about this before you can draw on experience and you should if you have it, but different opponent, different group. Our team is different. A lot of different things in this series.”

(Re game recap): “We worked all 82 games to have home ice in this situation. Obviously we would have liked to have won tonight. I thought we played well until that one goal that we thought should have been disallowed. We go home now and it’s a huge game.”

(Re LA’s second goal): “I don’t know. From the bench it looked like Al (Stalock) had it covered for a little bit of time. The coaching staff felt like they (LA) were just pushing in to the net. We’ve seen calls this year go the other way and go that way so we just have to move on.”

(Re LA’s second goal): “I’ve seen it a couple times and don’t think it should’ve counted. Things like that happen. It’s up to the team, the leaders and coaching staff to regroup after a goal like that, which we didn’t. They’re a great team; we’re a good team. I think all the outsiders picked this one to go to seven games and it is so here we go.”

(Re LA’s second goal): ”It was an innocent shot from the side that ended up getting tipped in front, went between my legs but from there it was just lying behind my skates. They pushed it in to the net and it was a good goal. They made a good play I guess, going hard to the net and those are the goals that will eventually win you the series. I don’t think the puck goes in if I don’t get pushed in. It was still so something had to be done for the puck to move in to the net.”
