PHILLY, PA: This is the second and final meeting with the Philadelphia Flyers this season. The Kings dropped the first meeting with the Flyers on February 1, losing 2-0 at STAPLES Center as Philadelphia’s Steve Mason stopped all 35 Kings shots, and former King Wayne Simmonds potted the game-winning goal. Tonight marks the Kings’ first visit to Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center since October 15, 2011.
METROPOLITAN COMMODITY: Philadelphia comes into tonight’s date with a 8-1-1 record in their past 10 games, the Kings 7-3-0. The Flyers (83 PTS) are second place in the Metropolitan Division, but are nowhere near safe from a guaranteed playoff spot. New York (82 PTS), Washington (79 PTS), and Columbus (79 PTS) trail close behind the Flyers. Not to mention, there are a couple of Atlantic Division clubs vying for, and currently holding the East’s wild-card spots.
RETURN ADDRESS: Jeff Carter returns to Philadelphia for the first time since he was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets on June 23, 2011. Mike Richards, who was traded from Philadelphia on the same day as Carter, but directly to the Kings, makes his second return to Philadelphia tonight. Can the Flyers’ pair of 2003 draft picks fuel a win in Philly?
BROWN’S IN TOWN: Dustin Brown suffered a chest contusion during the second period of the Kings’ 4-0 win over the Florida Panthers Saturday afternoon after scoring the Kings’ third goal. After further medical examination, Brown has met the team, albeit a day late, in Philadelphia. Per Jon Rosen of LAKingsInsider.com:
GOING FOURTH: Darryl Sutter demoted Mike Richards to the Kings’ fourth line prior to Saturday’s game against Florida. Richards scored his 10th goal of the season playing alongside Kyle Clifford and Trevor Lewis, a line that produced four points (2G, 2A) Saturday afternoon. Richards’ 10th goal matched his lowest single-season mark; he scored 10 goals in his second NHL season in 2006-‘07.
FLYING THROUGH: The last time the Kings skated at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center, on October 15, 2011, the fourth game of the 2011-’12 season, they won 3-2 in OT.
Justin Williams scored both Kings goals in regulation time, and former defenseman Jack Johnson redirected home the game-winning goal in OT on a well read and planned play anchored by Mike Richards, who was making his first visit to Philadelphia in a Kings uniform.
