The Kings extended their winning streak against Pacific Division opponents to seven games on Wednesday night with a 4-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks. Sweeping the season series against the Sharks 3-0, the Kings outscored their neighbors to the north 12-7. Here's how the Kings completed the three-game season sweep.
The Kings opened the game in dominating fashion, outshooting San Jose 22-8 in the first period and outscoring the Sharks 1-0. Scoring for the Kings was Adrian Kempe, who tapped in a nifty Quinton Byfield net-front pass. Kempe's goal marked his team-leading 18th of the season.
Into the second period, an early Sharks goal would even the game at 1-1. Responding relatively quickly were the Kings, retaking the lead with a Byfield tip-in on a point shot from Mikey Anderson for his first goal of the season. The goal also marked Byfield's third career multi-point game. Anderson's assist gave the Minnesota native 11 points on the season (2-9=11), tying his career high in points.
Heading into the third period with a lead, the Kings again surrendered a game-tying goal by the Sharks when Timo Meier found the back of the net with 9:49 remaining in the game. But fear not, the Kings connected twice over a 1:33 span to regain the lead 4-2. First, Gabriel Vilardi tipped in another point shot, this one from Sean Durzi. Then, Drew Doughty scored the eventual game-winning goal with a beautiful shot, beating James Reimer glove-side. Doughty's tally moved him to 25 points (3-22=25) on the season, a mark he has now hit 14 times in his career. A late Sharks goal would get the opponent within one score, but that was all.
Pheonix Copley took the net again for the Kings and picked up with 12th win in 14 tries this season, stopping 27 shots.
