The Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation has Adopted-a-Room inside The Family Room, a program operated by Ronald McDonald House Manitoba. The Family Room is located inside of the Children’s Hospital and opened its doors in May 2010.
“The whole purpose really was to extend our mission into the hospital,” said Kristin Mitchell, Communications & Development Manager of the Ronald McDonald House Manitoba. “To provide a home within the hospital for any family who has a pediatric patient so they can get a break, cup of coffee, relax and still just be steps away from their child.”
The Family Room sees anywhere from 50 to 100 people every day coming through to take advantage of the great space. They are open 365 days a year and are very thankful to have about 100 volunteers who work very hard to make sure the space is well kept and running smoothly.
“It’s really been a welcome change for the hospital,” said Mitchell. “There is really no other space like it in the Children’s Hospital and we’ve really been able to fill the need for families to have that space where they feel comfortable and a space that’s really and truly their own.”
The Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation has made a $10,000 donation toward the Adopt-a-Room program. The room they have adopted is called the Quiet Lounge. The Quiet Lounge was designed to provide families with a nice, comfortable and private atmosphere where they can go to make phone calls or have family discussions.
“We were fortunate to have a large space within children’s hospital and that allowed us to have a number of different rooms,” said Mitchell. “That room serves the purpose for families who need that privacy in a really comfortable setting that you can’t really get anywhere else in the hospital.”
The Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation believes in building strong relationships with their charity partners. The Ronald McDonald House is one partnership that has developed significantly over the past year.
“It’s been a really great relationship,” Mitchell explained. “Of course when the Jets came back to Winnipeg we were just as excited as everyone else. As a charity, the great benefit for us is having that Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation partner on board so that we can offer our families even more than we were doing before.”
