WINNIPEG -One of the many advantages for Paul Maurice this season is he doesn't have to worry too much about the unknown on his roster. There are not many spots open for the 2018-19 version of the Winnipeg Jets, and for the most part line combinations and defence pairings are set.
Jets winger Brandon Tanev is ready for another season of leading the team in hits and lining up with Andrew Copp and Adam Lowry on the team's checking line.
"It's training camp and you're here to work and improve on things," said Tanev who had a career-high 18 points last season. "We're out here every day working on things, and at the same time, going out there playing fast and physical in the one-on-one battles. At the same time building some chemistry and some confidence and having fun out there."

One could assume the physical style the Toronto, Ontario native plays with could wear him down over a long NHL season. But Tanev was a mainstay in the Jets drive into late May and feels fresh early in training camp.
"Obviously the season went a little bit later. But at the same time when you treat your body right and you take the necessary action, if you do come across some injuries, our training staff does an amazing job to get us ready for each game," said Tanev. "So just taking care of your body and understanding the physical part of the game and (to make sure you) put the right stuff in your body."

Getting an up close look at his line mate, Lowry marvels at Tanev's ability to constantly play at 100 miles per hour each and every night.
"He always seems to be moving and creating havoc when he's out on the ice," said Lowry. "He creates a lot of space for Copper and I. He's in on the forecheck, he's blocking shots on the penalty kill. He plays a real fast game, so I think he complements both Copper and I really well.
"Sometimes we joke, Copper and I that sometimes it would be best if he would slow down just a little bit for us and take a deep breath every once in a while," added Lowry. "He always seems to be going a 100 per cent and moving fast and its turned him into a real good player for us."
While his line mates may joke about Tanev slowing down, that's not what got him into the NHL. Maurice wants Tanev to keep being Brandon Tanev.
"There's a tenacity to it. It's not just he goes fast, and he doesn't get near anybody, he's on the puck and he's on the puck hard," said Maurice. "For not an overly big man he plays a very intense game. That's what he does. What I like about our room is you can have that conversation with every player and ask the question 'What is it that you do well?' I find on the ice they are focused on bringing that and Brandon goes every day, every practice as hard and as fast as he can because that's what he's selling."
