Summer at Camp

by Staff Writer / Winnipeg Jets

In advance of a busy summer season several construction projects were completed at Camp Manitou. The main lodge was renovated with new insulation as well as metal siding and a metal roof. The climbing wall was completed at the end of May, a new play structure was added in June and a pool heater was installed to lengthen the swimming season. In addition, construction has begun on the first of 12 new cabins that are being added on the north side of the property.

The summer staff team, comprised of 3 full-time and 42 part-time employees, provided an outdoor camp experience to 16 schools in June. More than 800 students were given the opportunity to finish their school year with an exciting day in the great outdoors!

Camp Manitou kicked off the summer on Monday, July 4th with campers from the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Academy (WJHA) and Elim Chapel. During the 4 weeks of July a total of 360 WJHA students will take part in a unique summer camp experience. The students will spend half of their day at the MTS Iceplex (splitting their time between on-ice drills and games, floorball and classroom sessions) and half of their day participating in a variety of activities at Camp Manitou.

The first of 5 individual camper weeks concluded on July 15th with 50 campers joining a variety of rental groups for a week of fun and adventure. Campers are excited with the Olympic theme, which includes the opportunity to earn points in various events and by demonstrating good sportsmanship and teamwork. Each week concludes with a medal ceremony complete with a podium!

Over the summer months we are expecting to host 350 individual campers and 28 rental groups. Many of the groups, like the Broadway Neighbourhood Center, WASAC, and the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities, are returning again after coming in 2015. Other groups, like Ma Mawi, Rossbrook House and the Indian & Metis Friendship Centre, will be coming back after an absence of several years.
