Prospect Profile: Spencer Machacek

by Eric Postma / Winnipeg Jets

Spencer Machacek
HEIGHT: 6'1" | WEIGHT: 195 LBS.
BORN: OCT 14, 1988
Spencer Machacek began his major-junior hockey career in 2005 with the Vancouver Giants super-team that also featured current Jets Evander Kane, Brett Festerling and Kenndal McArdle. Machacek won the Memorial Cup with the Giants in his sophomore season. In the 2007-08 season Machacek was named captain of the Giants, and posted a career high 33 goals, including a 14 game span in February when he registered 27 points.

The Lethbridge, Alberta native was selected by the Atlanta Thrashers in the third round, 67th overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft and is now in his fourth professional season.

Machacek is an ideal two-way winger, with enough size and strength to wreak havoc on opponents in the offensive zone. He is a gritty, two-way forward that drives to the net and pots some greasy goals. Spencer has show enough offensive touch to contribute when called upon, notching 64 goals and 86 assists in his first three AHL seasons.

An incredibly consistent player, Machacek is on pace to hit the 50-point mark this year with the St. John’s IceCaps. He has spent most of his time playing on a wing with Marco Rosa and Ben Maxwell.

The 6’1” right-winger has played in 12 National Hockey League contests with the Atlanta Thrashers (two in 2008-09, 10 in 2010-11) so far in his career, and is yet to register a NHL point. The next step for Machacek is to prove he belongs in Winnipeg.
