Prospect Profile: Paul Postma

by Eric Postma / Winnipeg Jets

HEIGHT: 6'3 | WEIGHT: 195 LBS.
BORN: FEB 22, 1989

Defenceman Paul Postma has already made an incredible impact on Jets fans, despite his limited exposure. Postma’s first-impression to the Winnipeg fans was scoring the first home goal of the preseason, and adding three more assists in the first home exhibition game for the Jets on September 20, 2011.

Postma is already in his third professional season after spending the bulk of the last two years with the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League. He has spent most of this season as he continues to develop his game with the St. John’s IceCaps, but has seen action in three NHL matches.

The Red Deer, Alberta native was selected in the seventh round (203 overall) at the 2007 NHL Entry draft by the Atlanta Thrashers.

The offensive side of Postma’s game has always been his strength. He notched 175 points (44 goals, 131 assists) in his 270-game Western Hockey League career split over four seasons with the Swift Current Broncos and the Calgary Hitmen. It’s the defensive side of the game that Postma has been challenged to improve.

For a man of his size, Postma is a very good skater with a long reach. He’s grown a reputation of being a great character guy, and has terrific hockey sense. He’s not physically dominant, but thanks to his speed and skating ability he doesn’t always have to play a heavy game.

Paul Postma impressed the fans and the management of the Winnipeg Jets at the 2011 Jets preseason camp, and was one of the last cuts. Postma is at a crossroads of his professional career when he needs to take the final steps to becoming an NHL regular.
