Game Blog: Jets vs Hurricanes

by Staff Writer / Winnipeg Jets

Immediately following their last meeting on Mar. 30 (1-3 L), the Winnipeg Jets (22-19-2) and Carolina Hurricanes (17-23-2) were separated by four points in the Eastern Conference standings. Since then the Hurricanes have gone 1-8-0 to drift away from the playoff picture, currently sitting in 14th place in the Eastern Conference. The Mar. 30 loss to the Hurricanes was part of a five-game skid for the Jets, but they have since won four straight to pull themselves back into the thick of the playoff race. The Jets are tied for the eighth seed in the East with the Rangers who have one game in hand. The Jets are 2-1-0 in a season series with the Hurricanes that has seen the road team win all three contests.

Jets starting lineup: Bryan Little, Andrew Ladd, Blake Wheeler, Ron Hainsey, Zach Bogosian, Ondrej Pavelec.

0:46: The Jets got an early power play opportunity as Justin Faulk went off for tripping in the first minute of the opening frame. The Jets couldn't quite get set up to get much going on the advantage.

2:43: The Hurricanes got caught again with a couple seconds remaining on their first penalty as Jordan Staal went off for hooking. The Jets power play went back to work but couldn't solve goaltender Justin Peters.

The best chance came a couple minutes later as Evander Kane had a glorious opportunity on a wraparound attempt but just couldn't quite tuck it past Peters...and the game went on scoreless.

Kane using his speed to create some chances. Good opportunity but Peters up to the challenge and ref blows whistle.          @IllegalCurve
12:13: JETS GOAL: Zach Bogosian tallies his fourth of the season to put the Jets on the board first. Bryan Little tried to put the puck on net but it just got away from him so he instead pushed it up to Bogosian streaking in on his right. Bogosian reached for it and was able to poke it through the legs of Justin Peters. 1-0 Jets.

Captain Andrew Ladd picked up the second assist on the goal, which was his 300th career point.

Through 20 minutes, the Jets led the Hurricanes 1-0. Shots on net were 10-3 in favour of the Jets.

6:27: Ondrej Pavelec pulls out an amazing stop on Justin Faulk at the back door. With the wide open net, Faulk figures it's a sure-goal but Pavelec had other plans as he reached out at the last second and robbed him with the paddle of his stick. He knocked it down and smothered it quickly to end the play.

Save of the year candidate as Ondrej Pavelec comes across to stone Justin Faulk with paddle of his stick with 13:33 left in 2nd period          @WiebeSunSports
8:27: JETS GOAL: Paul Postma adds to the Jets lead with his fourth of the season. Blake Wheeler sent a perfect cross-ice pass onto Postma's stick at the bottom of the circle. He took a look and wristed the puck from a sharp angle that bounced off the arm of Peters and into the back of the net. 2-0 Jets.

10:38: CANES GOAL:
Tuomo Ruutu gets the Hurricanes on the board as he slips one through the legs of Ondrej Pavelec. Justin Faulk dished him the puck for the assist and Tim Gleason picked up the second helper.

After two periods of play, the Jets were leading the Hurricanes 2-1. Shots on goal were 22-15 Jets through 40 minutes.

8:40: JETS GOAL: Blake Wheeler widens the Jets lead to 3-1 after Bryan Little found him streaking up the middle in the neutral zone. Neck and neck with his defender, Wheeler was able to blast a wrister that flew past Peters high glove side. Andrew Ladd gets his 301st career point.

Another 6 pt night for @NHLJets big line of Ladd-Little Wheeler who have 8-19-27 in 14 + periods of @NHLJets home stand.          @KellyMooreCJOB

Tuomo Ruutu narrows the gap to 3-2 after he tipped home a Marc-Andre Bergeron blast form the point that went over the shoulder of a screened Pavelec.

15:24: Winnipeg time out

Pavelec with another big stop to preserve the one goal lead. This time on a pinching Corvo. Jets ice puck and coach Noel takes timeout.          @IllegalCurve

18:48: HURRICANES GOAL: Alexander Semin evens the score after Juri Tlusty sends a hard shot on net from the top of the circle. The puck was stopped at the line but split out for Semin to shovel home the rebound in the crease. 3-3.

And just like that it is tied. Jets way too casual in the d-zone. Kane had to be harder on that puck, Buff lost Semin and he ties game.          @IllegalCurve

Time ran out on regulation with the score tied at 3-3. This one would need OT.

1:23: JETS GOAL: Dustin Byfuglien tallied the overtime winner after he gobbled up a rebound on a two-on-one with Andrew Ladd. Ladd fired a shot the was kicked out by Peters but Byfuglien scooped it up and tossed it into the mesh to make it a 4-3 OT Final.
