Game Blog: Jets VS Hurricanes

by Staff Writer / Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets (18-15-2) and the Carolina Hurricanes (15-15-2) meet for a critical matchup at MTS Centre on Saturday afternoon. The Jets currently hold down the third seed in the Eastern Conference by way of leading the Southeast Division with 38 points. Winnipeg enters Saturday having gone 3-3-0 in their last six, however for Carolina it’s been a different story. The Hurricanes have gone 0-6-1 in their last seven games, including a 4-1 loss to the Jets on Mar. 26. The Jets have won both meetings between the clubs this season and have done so on the road in both instances. The teams will play one more game after Saturday – an Apr. 18 contest, also at MTS Centre.

Starting Lineup: Andrew Ladd, Bryan Little, Blake Wheeler, Dustin Byfuglien, Tobias Enstrom and Ondrej Pavelec in net.

1:06: CANES GOAL: Alexander Semin puts the Hurricanes on the board early after Eric Staal tried a wrap-around that split out onto Tuomo Ruutu's stick in front of Pavelec. He dished it to Semin at the back door to put the puck into the empty net. 1-0 Canes.

What a way for the Canes to take the crowd out of it. Though Jets did beat them Tuesday after giving up first goal.            @Ted_Wyman

9:41: CANES GOAL: Jussi Jokinen added a second goal to the board just as the penalty to Evander Kane expired. Joni Pitkanen sent a long cross-ice feed to find Jokinen at the back door, who had the wide open net to finish the play.

15:55: Chris Thorburn drops the gloves with Tim Gleason trying to ignite the crowd at the MTS Centre. Thorburn landed a punch that knocked off Gleason's helmet and dropping him to the ice to end the fight.

The Jets would get another late power play opportunity but couldn't find a way to solve Justin Peters and headed to their dressing room trailing 2-0. Shots were 11-7 in favour of the Jets through 20 minutes.

Not the start @NHLJets were looking for. And just what the Dr ordered for strugglinjg @NHLCanes who lead 2-0 after 1.            @KellyMooreCJOB

1:26: JETS GOAL: Olli Jokinen put the Jets on the board early in the second period after Evander Kane came flying across the blueline into the Canes zone. At the last second, Kane slid the puck across the crease for Jokinen to shovel home his seventh of the season. 2-1 Canes
Wheeler sets up Bogosian for a great chance and the Canes got a 2 on 1 the other way but Ron Hainsey broke it up. Great pace to 2nd.            @IllegalCurve

The Jets ran into penalty trouble in the second half of the second period that started with Dustin Byfuglien taking a roughing minor. With a handful of seconds left on the penalty, Grant Clitsome sent the puck flying over the glass  putting the Jets on a brief 5-on-3. Then, with Clitsome's penalty about to expire, Alex Burmistrov took a kneeing penalty as he attempted to use his body to take a Hurricane out of the play. The Jets PK unit went to work again and managed to kill off the flurry of penalties.

It wasn't over there as Blake Wheeler took a late penalty for roughing in front of the net. The Jets went back to the penalty kill and were successful again, holding the Canes off the board.

Through two periods, the Jets still trailed 2-1 but saw several great chances on Peters and the Hurricanes. Shots were 23-19 Jets.

Very entertaining second period. #NHLJets get on the board and then kill five straight minors to keep it 2-1 for Hurricanes. Fans incensed            @Ted_Wyman

0:28: CANES GOAL: Eric Staal adds to the Hurricanes lead after Semin sent him a perfect pass in the circle. He fired a shot on net that bounced off of a stick in front to beat Pavelec and make it 3-1.

As electric as MTS Centre was in the 2nd, it's a few thousand watts short of that 6:30 into the 3rd.            @KellyMooreCJOB

#NHLJets have shot a lot of pucks into Peters' midsection but the Carolina goalie has had great positioning all night            @Ted_Wyman
