Game Blog: Jets vs Canadiens

by Staff Writer / Winnipeg Jets

With one game remaining in their regular season, the Winnipeg Jets (24-20-3) are facing a true must-win situation for the first time this year when they take on the Montreal Canadiens (27-14-5) at MTS Centre on Thursday night. The ninth-place Jets are trailing the Senators and Rangers by a single point. Meanwhile, the Canadiens have one more game after Thursday as they try to clinch the Northeast Division title. Despite losing 5-3 in Washington on Tuesday, the Jets are 6-1-1 in their last eight games. The Canadiens have hit a rough patch of late, losing five of their last six. The two previous matchups this season between these clubs have taken place at Bell Centre, where Montreal won by scores of 4-3 and 4-1.

Starting Lineup: Andrew Ladd, Bryan Little, Blake Wheeler, Dustin Byfuglien, Derek Meech and Ondrej Pavelec in net.

The first period came to an end with the Jets leading the Canadiens 1-0. Shots favoured the visitors 7-4.

9:54: HABS GOAL: After a mad scramble in front of Ondrej Pavelec, Rene Bourque pulled the Canadiens even with the Jets. Alex Galchenyuk was able to find the loose puck in the crease and quickly pass to Bourque to make no mistake snapping it into an open space. 1-1

Minutes later...Blake Wheeler with a breakaway attempt but...

14:43: JETS GOAL: Blake Wheeler puts the Jets back on top as he pokes one through the legs of a sprawled out Price in front of the net. Bryan Little and Dustin Byfuglien pick up the assists on another mad scramble play. 2-1 Jets.

19th goal of the season for Wheeler, who poked rebound through legs of Price. #NHLJets showing some urgency here       @WiebeSunSports
Through 40 minutes, the Jets led the Canadiens 2-1. Shots through two were 19-14 in favour of Montreal.

2:07: HABS GOAL: Brendan Gallagher ties the game 2-2 early in the final period as he blasted a hard slap shot from the point that bounced off of Pavelec's body up and over him and trickled across the line.

6:21: Andrew Ladd took a roughing minor putting the Habs on a power play...

7:18: Jets take a too-many-men penalty putting the Jets down two men.

7:59: HABS GOAL: David Desharnais makes the Jets pay on the 5-on-3 oppportunity after PK Subban blasted a shot from the point that was turned aside by Pavelec but Desharnais was there at the back door to tap the rebound into the open net. 3-2 Habs.

10:51: HABS GOAL: Max Pacioretty picks up his second of the night, and widens the gap to 4-2 as he blasted a shot from the point that beat Pavelec.

That's how things would end at the MTS Centre tonight as the Jets fell to a 4-2 final in their final regular season game. Final shots were 30-25 in favour of the Canadiens.
