Game Blog: Jets @ Islanders

by Staff Writer / Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets (18-17-2) and New York Islanders (17-16-3) are separated by only one point in the Eastern Conference standings as they get set to meet on Tuesday night at Nassau Coliseum. While the Jets hold the third-seed in the East by virtue of leading their division, the Islanders are tied with the Rangers for eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 37 points. The Jets and Islanders are trending in different directions with Winnipeg losing three straight and the Islanders winning four of their last five games. Winnipeg has won the only meeting this season between the clubs – a 5-4 overtime win at MTS Centre that saw the Jets erase a 4-2 deficit late in regulation time. After Tuesday the two teams will meet one more time on Apr. 20 in Winnipeg.

Starting lineup: Bryan Little, Andrew Ladd, Blake Wheeler, Ron Hainsey, Zach Bogosian and Ondrej Pavelec in net

16:13: Anders Lee opened the scoring in his first NHL game as he sent a fluttering puck past a screened Pavelec from the top of the circle that somehow made it's way to the back of the net. Islanders lead 1-0.

Looks like putting in Paul Postma was good decision by Claude Noel. Jets need all the offence they can get and he ties it 1-1            @Ted_Wyman

18:06: JETS GOAL: The Jets answer back with just under two minutes remaining in the opening period as Paul Postma tallied his second of the season. Eric Tangradi did a great job of rushing to puck across the blueline and tossed a good shot on net from  sharp angle. The puck shot out and Postma was there in the slot to shovel home the rebound and tie things at 1-1.

The Jets and Islanders were all tied 1-1 through 20 minutes of play in Long Island with the shots favouring the home team 12-9.

6:02: JETS GOAL: Paul Postma taps home his second of the night and fourth of the season after Chris Thorburn sent him a nice feed at the back door to give the Jets their first lead of the game. Eric Tangradi set up the play bringing the puck into the Isles zone and dishing it to Thorburn.

9:56: ISLANDERS GOAL: Colin McDonald tied things up a few minutes later for the Islanders. Captain Mark Streit fired a slap shot from the point that was redirected by Michael Grabner in the crease. He was able to quickly get the puck to McDonald all alone at the back door...and it's 2-2.

The ice remaining with a serious tilt towards the Jets net but Ondrej the Giant stands tall. Outshot 27-13 right now.            @IllegalCurve

19:32: ISLANDERS GOAL: On the first Islanders man-advantage of the night, Frans Nielsen makes it count. Mark Streit sent a blast from the point that kicked out right to Nielsen who sent the puck into an open spot. It looked like the puck may have changed direction on-route to beat Pavelec. 3-2 Isles.

Through two periods, the Islanders led the Jets 3-2. Shots on net were 30-17 NY. The Jets held the edge in blocked shots 12-9.

Byfuglien's first shift of the 3rd period is as RW on top line w/ Ladd and Little #tsn.            @saraorlesky
