Coming Home

by Eric Postma / Winnipeg Jets

What an incredible night at MTS Centre, and all around Winnipeg I’m sure. From the anthems, to the player introductions, and the tribute to Rick Rypien, it all was part of a magical evening. It truly is a moment that is impossible to describe.  15 years of anticipation on the part of the Winnipeg hockey community, and 100 days of incredibly hard work by the True North staff, have made this into a game with such complex emotion that it’s tough to put in words.

An electric crowd even before the doors opened to MTS Centre, with pre-game parties starting early in the day, and I’m sure post-game festivities carrying late into the night (highlighted by the After Burner Social featuring Blue Rodeo at the Winnipeg Convention Centre).

Beyond the production, beyond the players, beyond the hype, it’s the hockey fans of Winnipeg that make this day so special.

Jets’ rookie Mark Scheifele has used the adjective ‘unreal’ in nearly every interview to this point, attempting to describe what it is like to be a part of this experience.  For hockey fans in Winnipeg, this game has seemed so beyond reality, so far off or intangible, that it couldn’t be grasped. Now that we’ve been there, and we’ve launched this 2011-2012 Winnipeg Jets season, the moment becomes real. No longer ‘unreal’ Mark Scheifele, this is entirely real.
