New Look: The Dallas Stars unveiled a new primary and secondary logo, along with a new color scheme and new uniform set as part of their sweeping rebrand and transformation on June 4th, 2013. It took over a year to complete the full rebrand.
New Hockey Staff: Jim Nill was announced as the club's new General Manager in April. In one of his first moves as GM, Nill named Lindy Ruff the team's new coach. Ruff brought former Sabres assistant James Patrick with him to Dallas, reuniting a staff that had some success developing young players in Buffalo.
Shawn Horcoff, Tyler Seguin, Rich Peverly, Dan Ellis, Sergei Gonchar, Chris Mueller.
Dallas acquired the rights to veteran defenseman Sergei Gonchar from the Ottawa Senators in early June. The team signed Gonchar to a new contract three days later, and a month after that made a trade with the Boston Bruins that brought centers Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverley to Dallas in exchange for forward Loui Eriksson and prospects. If that wasn't enough, Dallas acquired another veteran center, Shawn Horcoff, that same day.Top Forwards:
The addition of Shawn Horcoff, Tyler Seguin, and Rich Peverley
will allow Jamie Benn, who had 12 goals and 33 points in 41 games last season, to shift to the left wing alongside Seguin. Ray Whitney was second in team scoring last season with 11 goals and 29 points in 32 games.
Top Defensemen: Dallas inked Sergei Gonchar to a two-year, $10 million contract. Alex Goligoski led the Dallas blueliners in points with three goals and 27 points last season.
Besides Gonchar, the blueline looks like the same unit that ranked 22nd in shots-allowed per game and 24th in goals-against per game last season.
Goaltenders: Kari Lehtonen played 36 games and finished with a 2.66 GAA and .916 save percentage. Former backup goaltender Richard Bachman (unrestricted free agent) signed with the Edmonton Oilers on July 6th, 2013. The Stars signed unrestricted free agent Dan Ellis to a two-year contract.
Dallas Youth: Jaimie Benn, Cody Eakin, Alex Chiasson, Brenden Dillon, Jaimie Oleksiak, Valeri Nichushkin.
Much of the team's depth will be made up of young players who came in last season and established themselves on the roster, among them Alex Chiasson, Brenden Dillon and Cody Eakin. Also, look for 18-year-old forward Valeri Nichushkin, the team's first pick at the 2013 NHL Draft as well as defensive prospect Jamie Oleksiak, who both could be fighting for roster spots this fall.
The Stars haven't made the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2008. Will the major changes and additions to the club be enough to push them back into a playoff position?
How will Tyler Seguin adapt to being at center?
Will Jamie Benn become a franchise player?
