The New York Islanders have officially announced the appointment of forward Doug Weight as the team’s 12th captain in the organization’s 37-year history. Kyle Okposo, Richard Park, Mark Streit and Brendan Witt have all been named assistant captains.
Weight, a veteran of 18 NHL seasons, enters his second year with the Islanders after playing 1,184 career NHL games. Last season he scored 38 points (10 goals and 28 assists) in 53 games. At times last season, Weight served as the team’s assistant captain.
Okposo was originally drafted by the Islanders in the 2006 Entry Draft and began his professional career at the end of the 2008 season. He has played in a total of 74 career games, scoring 20 goals and 24 assists for a total of 44 points. Park enters his fourth season with the Islanders, totaling 89 points (36 goals and 53 assists) in 235 games. During several stretches over the past two seasons, Park has served as one of the team’s assistant captains. Streit finished as the Islanders leading scorer last season with 16 goals and 40 assists for 56 points, the first time a defenseman has led the Islanders in scoring since Denis Potvin accomplished the feat during the 1976-77 season. Along with Park, Streit served at times as one of the Islanders’ assistant captains last season. Witt, who is entering his fourth season with the Islanders, has played in a total of 848 career NHL games, 205 of them with the Islanders.
The Islanders will begin their 2009-10 season Saturday night at the Nassau Coliseum against Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and the defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins.
