Varlamov Named NHL Third Star of the Week

The National Hockey League announced today that Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov has been named the NHL's "Third Star" for the week ending on April 3, 2022.
Varlamov turned away 99 of 104 shots faced across three games last week, including a shutout against the New York Rangers, to help the Islanders collect three consecutive Metropolitan Division victories and move into fifth place in the division.

Tuesday night, Varlamov made 42 saves on 45 shots in a 4-3 Islander victory against the Columbus Blue Jackets, the second-most saves he has made this season. Thursday night, the Samara, RUS native helped the Islanders complete a home-and-home sweep of the Blue Jackets, making 30 saves in a 5-2 win at UBS Arena.

Varlamov finished the week by turning away all 27 shots faced against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, backstopping the Islanders to their second win at MSG this season. He is the second goaltender in NHL history and first in 96 years to shut out a single opponent in four straight road games. It was the first time he recorded wins on consecutive nights since February 11 and 12, 2016, and his five career shutouts against the Rangers are tied for second-most among active NHL goaltenders (Anderson and Halak, 5, Price, 7).
Varlamov is 6-1-0 in his last seven starts. The 33-year-old has a 2.73 goals-against average and .918 save percentage through 26 games played this season.
