Gionta Agrees To One-Year Contract

Forward tallied six points last season with the Islanders

The New York Islanders announced today that Stephen Gionta has agreed on a one-year, two-way (NHL/AHL) contract.

Gionta, 33, played in 26 games for the Islanders last season, scoring six points (one goal and five assists). The Rochester, NY native also played in seven games with the Islanders American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, scoring one goal and two assists.

Defenseman signs one-year deal with Islanders

The New York Islanders have agreed to terms with defenseman Calvin de Haan on a one-year contract.

de Haan, 26, established career highs in points (25), goals (5) and assists (20), while playing in all 82 games during his fourth full season with the Islanders. He finished second amongst Islanders defensemen in points and assists, while ranking fourth in the National Hockey League in blocked shots (190). At the completion of the NHL season, de Haan was selected as a member of Team Canada at the 2017 World Championships, winning a silver medal.

Gibson Agrees To One-Year Deal

Finnish goaltender made his NHL debut with the Islanders in 2015-16

The New York Islanders announced today, goaltender Christopher Gibson has agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way (NHL/AHL) deal.

Gibson, 24, made his National Hockey League debut with the Islanders in 2015-16, appearing in four games during his first year with the organization. He earned his first NHL victory on April 5, 2016 against the Washington Capitals, which clinched the Islanders' 2016 Stanley Cup Playoff berth. Last season, Gibson posted a 6-0-0 record with a 2.52 goals-against-average and .912 save percentage in seven games with the Islanders' American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Islanders Name Buchberger Assistant Coach

Former Asst. Coach and VP Player Development with Edmonton joins Islanders Staff

The New York Islanders announced today that Kelly Buchberger will serve as an Assistant Coach under Head Coach Doug Weight. 

Buchberger served as Vice President of Player Development for the Edmonton Oilers last season, after spending the previous two seasons as the club's Manager of Player Personnel. The Langenburg, Saskatchewan native spent six seasons as an Assistant Coach with the Oilers from 2008-2014. He also served one season as Head Coach of Edmonton's American Hockey League affiliate, the Springield Falcons.

Gudlevskis Agrees To Terms

Recently acquired goaltender signs one-year deal

The New York Islanders have agreed to terms with goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis on a one-year, two-way (NHL/AHL) deal. The Islanders had acquired Gudlevskis from the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 1 in exchange for forward Carter Verhaeghe.

Gudlevskis, 24, posted a 15-10-7-4 (W-L-OTL-SOL) record last season with a 2.65 goals-against average and a .897 save percentage in 37 games with the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League. The Aizkraukle, Latvia, native also appeared in one National Hockey League game last season with the Lightning.

Defenseman set AHL career highs in goals, assists and plus-minus with Bridgeport last season

The New York Islanders have agreed to terms with defenseman Kane Lafranchise on a one-year, two-way (NHL/AHL) deal.   

Lafranchise, 29, notched American Hockey League career highs in goals (five) and points (21) and tied a career-best 16 assists in his first full season with Bridgeport in 2016-17. A native of Edmonton, AB, Lafranchise also led the Sound Tigers with a plus-17 rating, which was also a career high.

Islanders Sign Helgeson

US-born defenseman joins Islanders after playing the last three years with New Jersey

The New York Islanders have agreed to terms with defenseman Seth Helgeson on a one-year, two-way (NHL/AHL) deal.
Helgeson, 26, scored one goal and posted 15 penalty minutes in nine games with the New Jersey Devils last season. The Faribault, MN, native added nine points (two goals, seven assists) in 48 American Hockey League games with the Albany Devils.

New Jersey selected Helgeson in the fourth round (114th overall) of the 2009 National Hockey League Draft. He's scored four points (one goal, three assists) with a plus-1 rating in 50 career NHL games with the Devils and added 38 points (seven goals, 31 assists) with a plus-43 rating in 218 AHL games with Albany.

Prior to his professional career, Helgeson played four seasons of college hockey at the University of Minnesota after two seasons with the Sioux City Muskateers of the United States Hockey League.
