Team Store Arrives at Nassau Coliseum

A major part of work done at the Nassau Coliseum this summer was the construction of the new team store.

The store, located outside gate 10 in the box office, opened last Saturday as the Islanders routed the Devils 6-2 in an exhibition game. Fans had been pining for a store as an alternative to the merchandise stands sprinkled throughout the concourse.

“The day and age of going to a counter and saying, ‘Can I see that? Can I try that?’ are over,” Tim Murray, the pro shop manager at Iceworks said. “The fans want the normal shopping experience, holding it up, touching it, feeling it, like you get from a normal department store.”

With a team store Islanders fans can do their shopping while at a game and the Islanders can now introduce new apparel and memorabilia directly to the fans.

“We have a tremendous amount of new merchandise that we weren’t able to show before because it was behind a counter. Now we can properly display new merchandise.” Murray said.

The new store is 2,300 square feet, which is almost four times larger than all the kiosk space combined. New merchandise includes a wider selection of women’s and kids apparel, as well as more player-name shirts and logo pucks from all 30 NHL teams.

“Our whole assortment is much deeper,” Terry Goldstein, the Islanders Director of Retail Operations, said. “We had two (women’s items) now we carry 10. We carried five kids items, now we carry 15 items. We carry more sweatshirts, t-shirts and official player training gear.”

The planning and construction process began in the second half of last season, with most of the building occurring over the summer. The store was completed days before the game versus New Jersey and the opening went better than anyone had hoped. The team store quadrupled the sales of last year’s preseason game vs. the Devils.

“(It was) outstanding,” Murray said. “Once everyone sees it they think it’s fantastic. We had overflow crowds for an exhibition game.”
The kiosks around the concourse will continue to sell Islanders jerseys, shirts and apparel.

Stores hours are Monday-Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and during all home games for ticket holders. The season kicks off Oct. 8 as the Isles host the Florida Panthers.

Be sure to check in to the team store on foursquare. Special discounts and merchandise available as the season goes forward.
