The National Hockey League has named New York Islanders’ center John Tavares the second star for the week ending March 21. Tavares totaled seven points on the Islanders’ three-game west coast trip last week.
On Tuesday, Tavares scored two goals and three assists in the Islanders’ 5-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. The first year center tied a team rookie record for points in a single game with five, a mark he now shares with Bryan Trottier (accomplished the feat twice), Mike Bossy, Dave Hudson, Pat LaFontaine and Mikko Makela.
The Islanders took on the Anaheim Ducks at the Honda Center on Friday and Tavares tallied a goal and an assist in the team’s 5-4 overtime loss.
The NHL also named Nashville Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne as the first star and Anaheim Ducks winger, Teemu Selanne as the third star.
