Welcome to New York, John Tavares
Two days after the Islanders made Tavares the No. 1 pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, the young center found himself in the center of the baseball diamond at Citi Field.
Tavares threw out the first pitch prior to the start of Sunday night’s game between the Mets and Yankees. Outfitted in a No. 1 New York Mets jersey and Islanders baseball cap, Tavares fired a strike from the mound.
“It was really a lot of fun,” Tavares said. “I got a nice reception and I am really excited to be here. To be able to be here for a Yankees/Mets game is really special.”
The highlight of the night for Tavares occurred before he got anywhere near the mound, however. Standing on the field during Mets batting practice, Tavares got the opportunity to meet Mets General Manager Omar Minaya and catcher Brian Schneider. But it was another encounter he will remember most.
“I got my welcome moment to New York when David Wright asked for my autograph,” Tavares said. “He welcomed me and wished me good luck. It was very cool to meet him. He is such a great player and represents New York so well.”
Overall, not a bad day for the top pick.
“I am just excited to be here and to represent the Islanders,” Tavares said. CLICK HERE to watch video of John Tavares at Citi Field
