On Wednesday, May 30, four-time Stanley Cup winner Butch Goring and Islanders TV Color Commentator Peter Ruttgaizer spent a few hours shooting intros and closings for the upcoming 2012 “Summer Ice” series to be broadcasted by MSG Plus. The shoot took place on the Long Beach boardwalk, where Goring and Ruttgaizer were surrounded by joggers, bikers and surfers.
“It was fun. It was a great atmosphere,” said Goring. “To be looking out at the Atlantic Ocean, it was a beautiful setting.”
The two filmed an opening preview for select Islanders games being re-aired during the summer months followed by a closing segment recapping the highlights.
The “Summer Ice” series: Islanders Edition, will feature four of the best games of the 2011-2012 season. The episodes will air Saturdays at 8 p.m. beginning June 16.
The first game to air will be the Islanders Oct. 15 win against the long-time rival New York Rangers. In the game, star forward John Tavares scored his third career hat trick, including the game-winning goal as well as an empty netter. Goalie Evgeni Nabokov made 29 saves in his season debut, a 4-2 victory.
On June 23, the Islanders Dec. 3 match-up against the Dallas Stars will be rebroadcasted, showing a close game that resulted in a 5-4 win for the Islanders. Matt Moulson recorded a career-high four goals, and each was essential to the Islanders win. Tavares and P.A. Parenteau both assisted on three of Moulson’s goals.
The Feb. 11 game vs. the Los Angeles Kings will replay June 30. The 2-1 overtime win can be attributed to Mark Streits game-winning backhander past Kings goalie Jonathan Quick. Prior to the game, former Islanders captain Kenny Jonsson was honored as an inductee into the New York Islanders Hall of Fame.
The final game of the “Summer Ice” series is the March 29 triumph against the Pittsburgh Penguins, which will be telecast on July 7. Marty Reasoner gave the Islanders the lead with his first period goal, while Josh Bailey (five points) and Kyle Okposo (4 points) each scored two goals in the 5-3 win.
Goring found all four of the games to be re-aired over the summer to be highly exhilarating.
“I like it when individuals have really strong performances and I think that Islanders fans can get really excited when you look at all those individuals - Josh Bailey, Matt Moulson, Mark Streit and John Tavares,” said Goring. “They’re really the nucleus of the hockey club so when you see those types of performances you can get excited about it and be very optimistic for the upcoming season.”
For Ruttgaizer, the Islanders-Rangers match-up was his favorite to watch.
“I had seen the rivalry between the Rangers and Islanders on television but I never experienced it live so that was a real treat because the fans really got into it,” said Ruttgaizer. “That was the game out of the four that I was really impressed with.”
Islanders’ fans can get their hockey fix throughout the summer months as they eagerly wait for October by tuning into MSG Plus’ “Summer Ice.” The series starts on June 16 at 8 p.m. with an exciting Islanders-Rangers face-off.
