Steve Mears has been named the new radio play-by-play voice of the New York Islanders. Mears will make his debut on Bloomberg Radio 1130 when the Islanders' 2006-07 season begins Oct. 5 in Phoenix .

"When it comes to hockey play-by-play, Steve is one of the brightest young talents in North America ," said Islanders spokesman Chris Botta. "After an extensive search in which we listened to more than a hundred applicants from every level of hockey, Steve was the definitive choice. Our fans are going to love the passion and energy he puts into his calls."
Mears joins the Islanders after four seasons in the Central Hockey League, where he was the radio announcer and Director of Media Relations for the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. Prior to his years in Louisiana , Mears was the radio voice for three seasons at Bowling Green University (CCHA).

In 2004-2005, he was named CHL Broadcaster of the Year. Mears was also selected to broadcast the 2004 and 2006 CHL All-Star Games. The Pittsburgh native is a graduate of Bowling Green .
