Shannon - Battling Breast Cancer

by Staff Writer / New York Islanders

Throughout the month of October, the New York Islanders are encouraging fans to stand up in the fight against cancer. Today, the club would like to share a recent letter from Shannon, who is currently battling breast cancer and raising a baby girl.

I was 26 weeks pregnant and 29-years-old when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in August. I went through surgery and three rounds of chemotherapy while I was pregnant. I am happy to say that I gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby girl. I am continuing the fight against cancer and undergoing more chemo and radiation. Cancer has changed my life in many ways. Yes, life has become more difficult, but it has opened my eyes to all the good in the world and to so many wonderful people who have helped me in ways that I can not even put into words. I am extremely thankful for my family, old friends and new friends. I feel like it is my mission to help others by raising awareness. Cancer does not discriminate and I want to help as many people as I can. So many people have reached out to me, and it is my turn to pay it forward.
