RexCorp Islanders Inspire a Difference-Maker

by Staff Writer / New York Islanders

First-year charity initiative hosts 1,000 children at Kids' Day, Too, bringing total to more than 11,000 children treated to Islanders home games this season

For the second Kids' Day of the season, more 1,000 kids had the experience of a lifetime thanks to RexCorp Islanders Inspire. With signs in hand and smiles on their faces, these enthusiastic young children made Kids' Day Too an even more memorable event. Their enthusiasm along with all of the fans undoubtedly played a role in the Islanders' 3-2 comeback victory over San Jose on Monday afternoon. Head coach Ted Nolan mentioned in his post-game interview the crowd as a factor in their third-period surge.

RexCorp Islanders Inspire is an initiative developed by the Islanders following suggestions from long-time corporate sponsors and season ticketholders. The franchise and its extended family of sponsors and fans realized that so many continue to reflect on the experiences they had as children attending Islanders games, or more recently, as parents attending with their children.

Rexcorp Islanders Inspire provides the Long Island business community the opportunity to create those same memories for over 11,000 children on Long Island that might not otherwise get the chance. Because We're All Islanders.

Bill Guerin and Mike Comrie arrived for their introductory press conference in July with a charitable announcement they wanted to make on their own. Coincidentally, the Islanders had a brand new community initiative that was a perfect fit for the new Islanders' vision.

"Mike Comrie and I talked a few times about making an immediate impact on the Long Island community," Guerin said. "We decided we would each contribute money towards bringing children to Islanders games. When we showed up for the press conference and told the Islanders what we wanted to do, that's when we learned about RexCorp Islanders Inspire. Mike and I looked at each other and we were like, 'Perfect. That's it.'"

Since then, Rick DiPietro, Ruslan Fedotenko, Jon Sim, Josef Vasicek, Mike Sillinger and dozens of other individuals and company have signed on to a program of which the Islanders organization is very proud.

"It was a great day for everyone involved," said Tony Bandelato, the Executive Director of the Hempstead Boys and Girls Club. "It provided an opportunity for our youngsters to become more familiar with the Islanders and hockey. Many of our kids lack the funds to be able to attend events like these, so this was their chance to experience something different."

The Islanders have also provided bus transportation to and from the Nassau Coliseum. Said Bill Guerin's wife, Kara: "What you find is the transportation is every bit as important to the charities as the game tickets. Working with RexCorp Islanders Inspire, we've made this a day these children will never forget."
