Recap: Islanders 6, Devils 4

One night after falling in Newark, the New York Islanders responded with a 6-4 win over the New Jersey Devils on Sunday evening at Barclays Center.
Ryan Strome scored two goals and had a team-high three points, as the Islanders outlasted the Devils in the offensive affair. In the process, the Islanders extended their home point streak to 11 games (9-0-2), but now embark on a nine-game road trip. The win also secured two important points for the Islanders, who finished the game with 64 points, one point behind the Toronto Maple Leafs for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference

"This was kind of a last team to score kind of thing," Interim Coach Doug Weight said. "We had some big plays at the right time from guys, which is how you win, but it wasn't a Rembrandt."

Weight said the Islanders fell into the Devils' lull on Saturday night, but there was none of that on Sunday. The Islanders out-attempted the Devils 32-16 and outhit them 24-4 in the first period, at least showing some jump, even though the score was tied 1-1 by the intermission.
The game opened up in the second period, with the Islanders blowing the doors open with three straight goals, only to have the Devils ride their tailwinds for two, making it 4-3.

"Even the ones we gave up, I thought we played a pretty hard game. We were tough to play against," Strome said. "We got to the front of the net. Last night [Cory Schneider] saw too many shots easily, we didn't get enough bodies there. Playoff mentality. Tonight we did and it paid off."

Casey Cizikas started the goal rush, catching Keith Kinkaid off guard on a backhand wraparound attempt, beating the Devils goalie five-hole at 2:44. Strome and Andrew Ladd scored a pair of goals 2:27 apart, both beating Kinkaid off the rush from the right circle. Strome's second of the game beat Kinkaid five-hole at 9:32, while Ladd buried his 16th of the season stick side to make it 4-1 at 11:59.

The Devils answered before the end of the period, as Kyle Palmieri made it 4-2 at 13:21, while Steven Santini scored for the second straight game, his shot deflecting off Stephen Gionta and Berube before crossing the line at 17:55.
The Islanders re-padded their lead early in the third period, as John Tavares - who was cross-checked by Andy Greene to end the period - scored 26 seconds into the frame. His goal was the result of some crisp passing from the top power-play unit, with Josh Bailey, Anders Lee and Ryan Strome dishing the puck before finding Tavares for his 21st of the season. Chimera put the Islanders up 6-3 34 seconds later, wheeling down the right side and beating Kinkaid cleanly up high.

"We talked about not winning the game 4-3, but trying to win 6 or 7-3," Strome said. "From the turnaround we've had over the last month or so, we've been really good in the third period. Good to have that confidence going into the third."

Taylor Hall scored a power-play goal at 8:37 of the third period, but that's as close as the Devils came. Berube and Kinkaid each finished the game with 26 saves.
The Islanders kick off a nine-game road trip, starting on Tuesday night in Detroit. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m.
