Recap: Bruins 5, Islanders 0

Tuesday night was a tough one for the New York Islanders.
They were shut out 5-0 by the Boston Bruins on home ice - their eighth-straight home loss to the Boston - and lost two players, Valtteri Filppula and Cal Clutterbuck, in the process. On top of that, the Washington Capitals (93 points) overtook the Metropolitan Division lead with a 4-1 win over New Jersey, while the Pittsburgh Penguins (89 points) moved two points back after getting a point in a 3-2 shootout loss to Carolina.

"By no means we feel that this is acceptable," Josh Bailey said. "Tonight obviously wasn't to the level that we've set for ourselves. I think when those things happen you need to talk about it and learn from it and turn the page and still remember that we do have a good, quality team in here."
Sean Kuraly scored a pair of goals for the Bruins, including the game-winner, while Tuukka Rask stopped all 13 Isles shots - a season low for the Islanders - for his fourth shutout of the season. Boston led from the 1:12 mark onward and controlled large swaths of the game, out-shooting the Islanders 39-13 and out-attempting them 68-31.
"We got it handed to us pretty good tonight," Matt Martin said. "It was a bit of a wakeup call."

LEHNER RETURNS TO ACTION:

Robin Lehner started Tuesday's game, his first action since suffering an upper-body injury on March 5.
Lehner got a rude welcome back, as Kuraly put the Bruins ahead 1-0 at 1:12 of the first period, snapping a shot off the goalie's glove and in. That said, Lehner kept it a 1-0 game in a first period that saw the Isles get outshot 14-2.
Matt Martin tried to inspire the Islanders by challenging Zdeno Chara to a fight off the opening draw in the second period, but the galvanizing didn't yield the intended results. Cal Clutterbuck overskated a puck in the Isles end and Noel Acciari snapped it through Lehner's five-hole to make it 2-0 at 2:52. Kuraly netted his second of the game at 16:17 of the second period, knocking home Danton Heinen's backdoor feed after some work by the Bruins below the goal line.
"We've just got to be ready to go from the get go," captain Anders Lee said. "They played a playoff type of game tonight. They were heavy. They were strong. We were making mistakes form the start. Fumbling here and fumbling there with the puck. They capitalized off of those opportunities."
Down 3-0 entering the third, Patrice Bergeron scored off the rush at 6:32 to make it 4-0, while Jake DeBrusk's breakaway rip made it 5-0 at 10:20. After the game, the Islanders said all they can do is turn the page.
"All in all it was a frustrating night from start to finish," Martin said. "None of us played well. I think you kind scrap it. Remember it, but scrap it."

FILPPULA AND CLUTTERBUCK LEAVE GAME:

Valtteri Filppula and Cal Clutterbuck both left Tuesday's game with an upper-body injuries and did not return. Filppula left the game after a collision with Connor Clifton behind the Bruins net in the first period, while Clutterbuck exited in the second period after an awkward hit by John Moore along the boards.
Barry Trotz did not have an update on either forward after the game. Casey Cizikas returned to action after missing two games with a lower-body injury.
