Rapid Recap: Islanders 3, Sabres 2

The New York Islanders beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 on Tuesday night at UBS Arena, earning two points in a key wild card matchup.
Casey Cizikas (1G, 1A), Josh Bailey (1G, 1A) and Hudson Fasching (1G, 1A) powered the offense for the Islanders, while Dylan Cozens and Owen Powers had the pair of goals for Buffalo.
Ilya Sorokin made 22 saves in his second consecutive win, while Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 36 of 39 in the loss.
With the win, the Islanders (74 points) stayed in the first wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, one point up on the Pittsburgh Penguins (73 points), though the Penguins have three games in hand. The win also puts some breathing room between the Isles and Sabres (68 points), though Buffalo still retains three games in hand.

12:38 - BUF 1, NYI 1 - Hudson Fasching handles the puck behind the goal line and chips it toward the front of the net, where Casey Cizikas is there to beat Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen five-hole. Alexander Romanov tallies the secondary assist.

3rd Period:
1:51 - NYI 2, BUF 1 - The Islanders take their first lead of the night early in the third frame as Josh Bailey backhanded a rebound that beat Luukkonen glove-side. Cizikas records the primary assist, while Alex Romanov picked up his second assist of the game.

4:59 - NYI 2, BUF 2 - The Sabres respond quickly after New York's second goal, evening the score at two apiece. Kyle Okposo beats a screened Sorokin with a long wrister from the point.
7:37 - NYI 3, BUF 2 - Hudson Fasching records his second point of the night with a goal to regain the lead. Fasching redirects a feed from Bailey with his shinpad to beat Luukkonen. The call on the ice was originally no goal, but the situation room ruled it a good goal after review. Scott Mayfield picks up the secondary assist.
