Kids, you can thank Cliff Gault.
Over his 15 years with the New York Islanders, the group salesman has invited countless Long Island youth hockey teams to skate on the Nassau Coliseum ice. It’s a unique experience, one typically out of reach at most professional venues, but Gault made it happen in his community.
“To see these kids’ faces,” Gault said. “All these kids get so excited to skate on the Coliseum ice for the first time.”
Making an impact on the Long Island hockey community means a lot to the Dix Hills resident. His proudest moment during his career in the front office was a ticket drive for a fundraiser benefitting the children of Nassau County Highway Patrolman Michael J. Califano, who died on duty in 2011. The charity game sold over 2,000 tickets, with a portion of the proceeds going into college funds for his three children.
Gault’s favorite on-ice memory came in 2002, when the usually mild-mannered and jocular salesman wanted a piece of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
“The energy of the crowds was incredible,” Gault said. “Everybody thinks that when we played Pittsburgh a couple of years ago, that was incredible, but the Toronto series was 10 times more incredible. The excitement. The physicality of that series was incredible and vibrated into the crowd. Everybody wanted a piece of somebody.”
But it’s easily the off-ice part of the job that drives Gault at work every day. He’s a member of the community he’s serving and has been serving proudly for the past 15 years.
