Proud of Our Staff: Adam Ortiz and Janet Nelson

Adam Ortiz and Janet Nelson are both fixtures on the back end in the Islanders front office. Much like stay-at-home defensemen, their contributions don’t always grab headlines, but are key to making the team run smoothly every day.

Ortiz, a 15-year employee, is the team’s Ticket Manager, while Nelson, a 14-year vet, is the Accounts Payable Coordinator. In short, Nelson handles the money, while Ortiz manages the currency.

Nelson grew up an Islanders fan and remembers watching the team parade down Hempstead Turnpike during the dynasty years. She now gives her staff tickets to her family and friends, letting them create their own Islanders memories.

Her favorite memories since joining the staff take place off the ice. Grabbing lunch with Clark Gillies in Westbury, or trying to convince her godson over the phone that she was actually hanging out with Billy Smith are just two of her favorite memories.

“Billy signed a beer bottle for my godson for his 19th birthday,” Nelson said. “He still has the bottle.”

Ortiz is an avid hockey fan and relishes the chance to fuse his work and passion together every day.

“I’ve loved hockey my whole life and it’s not every day that you can come to work and do something you are passionate about,” Ortiz said.

His favorite Islanders memories include the 2002 playoff series against the Toronto Maple Leafs, as well as Bill Torrey night (Jan. 13, 2001). As the ticket manager, there’s nothing more thrilling than having a packed house with a boisterious crowd and uncomparable energy. Ortiz said he could feel the energy pulsate through his chest when the Islanders retired Torrey’s bow tie and had the same type of feeling during the Islanders-Leafs series.

For Nelson and Ortiz, their favorite part of working for the team is the people they work with on a daily basis. They are a pair of great veteran teammates in the Islanders front office.
