The New York Islanders return to Barclays Center Monday, hosting the Washington Capitals in preseason action at 7 p.m.
This is the Islanders and Capitals first meeting since Game 7 in the first round of the playoffs last spring, though the stakes are considerably lower this time around.
The Islanders are expected to ice a veteran-laden lineup Monday, after trimming 24 players from their preseason roster over the weekend. Notable names include defenseman Scott Mayfield, who was loaned to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and goaltender Kevin Poulin who was claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Thirty players remain on the Islanders roster – 19 forwards, eight defensemen and three goalies.
The Islanders are looking to get back into the preseason win column, after dropping three games over the weekend. The Islanders lost a pair of split-squad games to the Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils Friday, as well as a neutral-site game to the Carolina Hurricanes Saturday. The Capitals are 2-0-1 in three preseason games.
Tonight marks the Isles’ final home preseason game. The next time they take the ice at Barclays Center it will be in the home opener October 9 against the Chicago Blackhawks.
