The New York Islanders shut out the New Jersey Devils 2-0 on Thursday night at Barclays Center, improving to 2-2-0 in four preseason contests.
Kieffer Bellows and Anders Lee scored power-play goals for the Islanders, while Thomas Greiss (25 saves) and Christopher Gibson (11 saves) combined for the shutout. Bellows opened the scoring late in the first period, while Lee added the insurance at 12:21 of the third. Keith Kinkaid stopped 25-of-27 shots for the Devils.
"It always takes a few games to figure things out and get your legs under you and every game you start to feel better and better whether that's with the systems or timing or positioning down," Lee said. "Tonight we had an off start, but we worked through it, worked hard and were tougher to play against in the latter half of the game and it showed in the third period. We played with a one-goal lead and we held it."

BELLOWS BURIES AGAIN:
Kieffer Bellows figured the best way for him to make an impression on the Islanders coaches is to do what he does best: shoot and score.
Bellows netted his second goal of the preseason on Thursday night, finding space in the slot and snapping a Tanner Fritz feed high glove past Kinkaid at 19:19 of the first period.
Safe to say, he's making an impression on Head Coach Barry Trotz, who said Bellows is making a case to stay with the Islanders, especially with his shot.
"He's got really good hands and shoots the puck to score," Trotz said. "He doesn't shoot the puck just to put it on net, he's shooting to score. A really good young player and he continues to produce every game so he's getting an opportunity."
Bellows has gotten an opportunity to play on the power play in his three preseason games, scoring both of his goals with the man advantage. He was also on a line with Jordan Eberle for Thursday's game, so he's getting an opportunity to play with top-flight players.
"I'm just trying every single day to prove myself and work as hard as I can," Bellows said. "Putting a goal in obviously helps, but I think the biggest thing for me is just hard work and determination and helping this team get a win."

GREISS/GIBSON COMBINE FOR SHUTOUT:
Thomas Greiss stopped all 25 shots he made in his second start of the preseason. Greiss looked sharp in his 40 minutes of work and his best save came early in the first, kicking out the left pad on Travis Zajac who had all sorts of time and space in front of the Isles net. Gibson was solid in relief, stopping 11 shots in his 20 minutes of work. So far the Islanders have pitched a pair of shutouts in four preseason games.
"I've been encouraged with Thomas the whole training camp and with all of our goaltenders," Trotz said. "They're building their foundations."
ISLES PRACTICE SPECIAL TEAMS:
Thursday's game had a herky-jerky feel to it with plenty of penalties between the two teams. The Islanders finished the night 2-for-8 on the power play, while the Devils went 0-for-3. If nothing else, the Islanders said it was good practice to work on their special teams in a live setting.
"It's a work in progress and that's what preseason is all about," said Lee, who cleaned up a rebound for his first goal of the preseason. "Since we've gotten to camp, we've learned a lot, we've been challenged a lot and it's got a different feel forsure."

"SAY UNCLE!"
Johnny Boychuk played against his nephew - John Quenneville - in Thursday's Islanders-Devils games. Quenneville is the brother of Islanders prospect David Quenneville - who didn't play in the pre-season contest - and both are related to Boychuk through marriage.
Boychuk had David Quenneville
stay in his basement prior to rookie camp
, but judging by the picture above, he had something else in store for John.
