Over 240 kids laced up skates and picked up sticks for the first time over the weekend, as the New York Islanders hosted a Try Hockey For Free event on Long Island.
The event, which was sponsored by Cohen Children's Medical Center and USA Hockey, offered kids the chance to try hockey in a fun, supportive and cost-effective environment, with full equipment and instruction provided. Islanders alumni Arron Asham and Radek Martinek, along with players from the PAL Junior Islanders and Islanders Girls Elite programs helped lead the sessions.
In total, 242 kids, all ages 4-9 attended the 10 sessions, which took place in local rinks across Long Island over the weekend. There were a few slips and falls, but just as many smiles as a new generation of players were introduced to the game.
