There were a lot of rookies taking the ice on Saturday.

Over 150 kids got to experience hockey as the New York Islanders held a try hockey for free day on Saturday at local rinks in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, Brooklyn and Queens.

Islanders alumni Arron Asham and Radek Martinek were on hand tying skates, teaching the basics of hockey and introducing a new crop of kids to the game.

Try Hockey for Free is a USA Hockey sponsored event designed to provide kids, between the ages of 4 to 9, a completely free experience to try youth hockey.
