October is Cancer Awareness Month

by Staff Writer / New York Islanders
We all know the sounds and the feelings that arise within the Nassau Coliseum walls when the goal horn sounds or when an Islander delivers a bone crunching hit.  We all feel like a family knowing that the team is playing for us...Islanders.

But for the 16,234 fans that pack the arena, there are many other Islander fans that are not as lucky to make it to a game due to illnesses they personally or a family member are battling.

Throughout the month of October, the Islanders are teaming up with OSI Pharmaceuticals and Advanced Radiation Centers of New York to tell the stories of numerous Islanders fans and how cancer has affected their lives.

Our next story comes from Roger Leider who writes about the inspriational story of his wife who has battled her way back from breast cancer.

I would like to submit my wife, Martha Leider, as an inspirational survivor of Breast Cancer.

Martha is a hockey mom with a son Jeremy who plays Tier II travel hockey for Long Beach Apple Core.  She takes him to and from practice two times a week and attends his games.  She's also the mom to Sydney who attends elementary school and plays soccer and Martha is Sydney's biggest fan.

Martha has a real zest for life.  Since being diagnosed and treated for Breast Cancer in 2006, Martha has completed her studies for an AuD doctorate degree in Audiology.  She has also traveled throughout Canada and the U.S. and has done such lifetime experience activities as the Olympic Bobsled run in Lake Placid, NY, swam with Sea Lions at the Sea Lion Adventure in Edmonton, Canada and speedskated the Olymic Oval in Calgary, Canada.  She also goes to the gym 5 days a week and kayaks on the weekends.  All of this is in addition to working as a licensed Audiologist and rooting for her NY Islanders.

Martha has also become an active fund raiser for the American Cancer Society and has attained Pacesetter status
the past 2 years.  She also counsels patients in similar circumstances.

Please recognize my wife as an inspiraion to her famly and friends.  We love her!
