NYI Training Camp Primer, Part II

With the Islanders just weeks away from the start of the 2008-09 season, the team will open Training Camp tomorrow. Veterans, coaches and prospects will all head up to Moncton, New Brunswick, for a week of training, drills and exhibition games, in preparation for the new season.

The Islanders will take part in three exhibition games while in Canada. First, the Islanders celebrate their week in Moncton with a contest at the Moncton Coliseum, as they play host to the Boston Bruins. On Thursday, September 25, the Islanders play against the Philadelphia Flyers in London, Ontario. Then on September 27, the Islanders take on the Florida Panthers in Summerside, Prince Edward Island.
 
While all of your favorite Islanders will be at Training Camp, here's a look at a few of the forwards to keep an eye out for.


FORWARDS

Left Wings

Sean Bentivoglio
Born- 10/16/1985
Height- 5'11"
Weight- 190
Bentivoglio was signed by the Islanders just prior to his first Prospects Camp last season. This past season, he spent the season with the Sound Tigers. In Bridgeport, Bentivoglio was tenth on the team in points (32) by way of nine goals and 23 assists in 68 games. He also tied his career-high for points in a game, with three.


Justin DiBenedetto
Born- 8/25/1988
Height- 5'11"
Weight- 194
The Sarnia forward was the 175th overall selection in this year's NHL Entry draft and played on a line with number one overall pick Steven Stamkos. DiBenedetto was the Sting's second leading scorer last year, with 39 goals, 54 assists and 93 points. He was 11th in the league in points, 15th in goals, and 13th in assists. He also had three hat tricks, including two that were back-to-back.


Max Gratchev
Born- 9/26/1988
Height- 5'11"
Weight- 198
Gratchev spent his fifth season in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey league last year with Rimouski. He played in 39 games with the team and, despite limited playing time due to injury, was still in the top ten on the team in goals (9), assists (20) and 29 points.


Michael Haley
Born- 3/30/1986
Height- 5'11"
Weight- 198
Last season, Haley played for both the Sound Tigers (AHL) and the Grizzlies (ECHL). In limited action in Bridgeport, Haley scored two goals and two assists while amassing 75 penalty minutes. With Utah, Haley was selected to the ECHL all-star team—but was unable to play after being summoned to Bridgeport. With Utah, he had 11 goals, eight goals and 19 assists over 28 games. He also had 115 penalty minutes.


Kurtis McLean
Born- 11/2/1980
Height- 5'11"
Weight-185
Mclean has spent the past two seasons as a center for the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins of the AHL. Last season, Mclean played in 76 games, compiling 22 goals and 32 assists for 54 points, nearly doubling his point total of 32 from the year before. He also contributed four goals and 15 assists in 23 playoff games, both career highs. McLean played Division III hockey at Norwich University, where he was named the National Player of the Year in his senior year.


Jason Pitton
Born- 5/23/1986
Height- 6'2"
Weight- 215
Last season, Pitton split time between the Utah Grizzlies and the Bridgeport Sound Tiger, scoring five goals and eight assists for a total of 13 points during 23 games in Utah. He added another goal and four assists, along with 16 penalty minutes, over 21 games in Bridgeport.


Trevor Smith
Born- 2/8/1985
Height- 6'1"
Weight- 195
Smith played for both Bridgeport and the Utah Grizzlies last season, scoring 20 goals and adding 17 assists in just 53 games with the Sound Tigers- including a hat trick on April 11th. He scored 15 points in the month of February over a 13 game span. With Utah, Smith scored 11 times while recording 14 assists for a total of 25 points.



Centers

Josh Bailey
Born- 10/2/1989
Height- 6'1"
Weight- 188
The Islanders' first selection, taken ninth overall, from the 2008 NHL Entry Draft will make his debut next week at Training Camp. The center from the OHL had an All-Star season last year with Windsor. He finished third in the league in assists (67) and tenth in points (96). He finished second in points among draft eligible players behind only Steven Stamkos. Bailey was an alternate captain on Windsor, tallied two goals at the 2008 CHL Top Prospects Game and closed the season with a nine-game point streak.


Jeremy Colliton
Born- 1/13/1985
Height- 6'02"
Weight- 195
Colliton spent last season in the Islanders organization, playing 65 games with Bridgeport and 16 with the Islanders. With Bridgeport, he scored nine goals while tallying 11 assists. Overall, Colliton has appeared in 36 games for the Isles. He first made his NHL debut in the 2005-2006 season.


Tyler Haskins
Born- 5/26/1986
Height- 6'0"
Weight- 186
Haskins split the past season between Bridgeport and Utah. In the AHL, he played in 25 games and had one goal and three assists. With the Grizzlies of the ECHL, Haskins was the team's fifth leading scorer (43 points), was third in assists (27) and tied for fifth in goals (16). In the playoffs, he led the Grizzlies in points, with 15 in 15 games. His six post-season goals were third on the team, and his nine assists second.


Rob Hennigar
Born- 4/4/1983
Height- 5'11"
Weight- 174
Hennigar attended the University of New Brunswick in 2007-08. There, he won the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Men's Hockey Player of the Year as well as the Male Athlete of the Year Awards. Hennigar led New Brunswick Varsity Red all the way to the CIS finals, while posting a +27 with 15-43-58 points in 27 games. Additionally, he led the league in shorthanded goals, with four.


Tomas Marcinko
Born- 4/11/1988
Height- 6'42"
Weight- 187
Last season, Marcinko played for the OHL's Barrie Colts. With the Colts, he scored 19 goals and 26 assists for 45 points in 48 games. Those numbers were good enough to make him third on the team in goals and points, and second in assists. He also registered 54 penalty minutes. In the post-season, he scored four goals and three assists over the Colts' nine games. He was the team's leader in playoff goals and points, and was third in assists.


Ben Walter
Born- 5/11/1984
Height- 6'0"
Weight- 185
Walter, who had spent the previous two seasons in the Boston Bruins organization, played for the Islanders and Sound Tigers last season after being traded in September. He appeared in 68 games for Bridgeport, averaging nearly a point a game. He scored 20 goals to go along with 46 assists. He also added one goal in eight appearances with the Isles. He was second on Bridgeport in points with 66.



Right Wings

Mike Iggulden
Born- 11/9/1982
Height- 6'03"
Weight-215
Iggulden, who spent the past two years in the San Jose Sharks organization, played in 78 games for the Worcester Sharks last season, scoring 29 goals while tallying 37 assists. Last season he also appeared in one game with the San Jose sharks, failing to record a point. The 66 points he recorded last season were a career high, nine more than he had in 2006-2007. He played his college hockey at Cornell, where he played four years, tallying 13 goals and 21 assists.


Tim Jackman
Born- 11/14/1981
Height- 6'4"
Weight- 210
Jackman appeared in 36 games for the Islanders in 2007-2008. He had 57 penalty minutes, the fifth most of any Islander. In Bridgeport, he recorded 15-21-36 points over 44 games with the Sound Tigers, and recorded 67 penalty minutes. He also contributed with eight multi-point games.


Jesse Joensuu
Born- 10/5/1987
Height- 6'4"
Weight- 207
Joensuu started the year in Finland with Assat Pori, where he Led team in every major offensive statistical category. He displayed his offensive prowess with 17 goals, 18 assists and 35 total points over 56 games. He made one appearance in Bridgeport, but did not record any stats from the game.


Matt Martin
Born- 5/8/1989
Height- 6'2"
Weight- 192
Martin was the 148th selection in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Last year, he was a teammate of fellow Training Camp attendees Justin DiBenedetto and Mark Katic on the OHL's Sarnia Sting. Martin, along with DiBenedetto, played on a line with Steven Stamkos. Martin ranked third on the Sting in goals (25) and finished with 38 points and was second on Sarnia with 155 penalty minutes. He was also 3-3-6 over nine games in the playoffs.


Joel Rechlicz
Born- 6/14/1987
Height- 6'4"
Weight- 220
Rechlicz divided time between the Kalamazoo Wings and the Albany River Rats in 2007-2008. With the Wings, he scored his first goal in his professional hockey career, and compiled 100 minutes in the penalty box over 25 games. He added another point with an assist, and spent an additional 106 minutes in the box over 25 games in Albany.


Brandon Sugden
Born-6/23/1978
Height- 6'04"
Weight- 233
Sugden has spent the last two seasons with the St. Jean Chiefs of the LNAH. He had spent the previous four seasons with the AHL's Syracuse Crunch. In 37 games last year, Sugden compiled six assists. Overall, Sugden has spent over 10 seasons with teams from the OHL, IHL, ECHL, QSPHL, AHL, and the LNAH. Sugden is an unsigned training camp invitee.
